Error E00A0456 - can't split a partition or make a new one

Thread needs solution

I am trying to partition a drive on a new laptop, and Disk Director won't do it.

When I try to use the wizard to create a new partition, it says there isn't enough free space on the drive. When I try to use the wizard to split a partition, or use the manual system to split a partition OR to create a new one in unallocated space, it gives me

Error E00A0456

And fails to create a new partition. I've gone through every permutation I can think of, followed the manual precisely, everything. It always comes back to that.

This is running on XP Home SP3. I searched KB and the forums for this error number and came up with nothing. The only operation that succeeds is moving space from one partition to another or un-allocating it.

Any ideas?

How many partitions are on the drive? You can only have a maximum of four Primary partitions or three (or less) Primary partitions and any number of Logical partitions. If you already have four Primary partitions, that may be what's causing the problem.

Otherwise, posting a screenshot of DD shows (in Manual Mode) for your drive may help.

Hello all,

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

MudCrab, on behalf of the whole Forum Team I'd like to thank your for your valuable help. We really appreciate it.

Reed, in your case I need some additional information to find out what was the reason of the issue and to provide you with a solution.

1. Could you please create a screen shot of your partition layout and attach it to your reply?

2. Could you please download Acronis Report utility available at http://download.acronis.com/support/AcronisReport.exe and run it, create a report and attach it? This would provide me with the detailed information on the hard disk partition structure.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.
