How to read a TIB-2009 image with ABR 10 ?

Thread needs solution

Hello Acronis, or an experienced user

Is there a way to read (restore) a TIB file created with 2009-home
by Acronis Backup+Restore 10 (ABR-10) ?

Background:
Having numerous problems with TI 2009/10, I thought it would be a good idea to switch to ABR-10, which appears to be a useful product. But now, I detect that TIB files created with TI-2009 are incompatible with ABR-10. Any advice ?? Thanks in advance.

Hello Fred,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to solve the issue.

Acronis guarantees backup compatibility for different Acronis backup products only within the same version. E.g. Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Server for Linux will work with backups created by Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Workstation. You can’t restore backup archives created with Acronis True Image Home 2009 using Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 products.

I would recommend you to recreate all backup archives and images using Acronis Backup & Recovery 10. We can also investigate any issues you have with Acronis True Image Home 2009. If you agree please provide as many details of the issues as you can, also please write down all errors you receive (if any).

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Thanks, Dmitry,

First to say:
I had no experience with ABR-10.

And then:
I was now able to successfully validate with ABR-10 most of my TI-2009-home images. Before, errors occurred because ABR validates by default entire folders ("vaults"). In my case, it had to handle a number of TI-2009 images, some encrypted, others not. As soon as I switched to validation of *single backups*, it worked for most of the images. (I guess a validated image can always be restored)

And a critical remark to your reply:

As an employee of an electronic data archive, your compatibility policy ("same version") sounds strange to me.

Even if a backup is not the same as an archive, the two are related, and I suggest to ensure readability for *all* versions, at least in enterprise context. Even home users might look at a TIB file as a safe place from where they can retreive important data or former versions of files at any time. Otherwise, Acronis would be a product of quite limited scope, i.e. desaster recovery.

These remarks are related to your suggestion (to recreate all images): I can do this, but I cannot recreate the former versions stored in TIB files, only the current one!

It shouldn't be that difficult for you to write some TIB conversion tools allowing the migration of old formats to the currrent one. Just an idea.

Best, Freddy

Could you not restore the image using TI 2009 and then create a new image using B&R10?

I agree that the "short" compatibility life policy of Acronis needs to be revised. While it's usually much better than the "one version back" officially supported, it would be a big improvement to have official support for multiple previous versions. Or, as you suggest, a utility to convert them easily.

I also don't understand why Aconis does not support "home" image formats in their corporate products. It sure makes a mess when someone switches.
