Windows Backup Conversions Don't Work

Thread needs solution

TIBs converted to VHDs aren't recognized (found) by Windows 7\Backup and Restore Center or the Restore System Image feature of the Windows 7 Recovery Environment. (Installation Disk)

Anyone know how to get Backup and Restore or Restore Image to work with Acronis VHDs?

Hello Mercurio,

Let me provide you with the general procedure on how to convert the files:

Acronis True Image 2010 backup (TIB) files can be converted to Windows backup VHD files. There are several reasons why Acronis recommends doing this:

  • You can boot your machine from the converted VHD file to test if it is not corrupt and works fine;
  • You can boot from the converted VHD for testing purposes. For example, to install a new application and see if it runs fine;
  • You can keep the converted VHD file for emergency situations. For example, if your machine crashes and you need to get it up and running in no time, you can just boot from the VHD file.
  • In Windows 7, the VHD file can be mounted as an additional drive.

(!) If you are going to boot from the converted VHD file, there should either Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise Edition in the file.

(!) If you are going to mount the VHD file in Windows 7, there can be non-system Windows partitions.

(!) Any changes you make to the booted or mounted VHD file are saved to it. If you boot from the VHD file and make changes to the data that was not backed up (e.g. delete a file from drive that was not backed up), these changes will affect your live system.

(!) File backup (as opposed to partition backup) cannot be converted to VHD.

(!) You can only boot the same machine the backup of which was converted to VHD. Booting other machines from the same VHD files will fail.

(!) You cannot run the converted VHD file as a virtual machine.

Please do the following to convert your backup:

Run Acronis True Image Home 2010. Click Tools & Utilities -> Convert Acronis Backup:

2. Select your Acronis True Image Home 2010 TIB file:

3. Select the target location for the VHD file to which you are converting.

4. Click Proceed:

5. The operation will proceed to completion:

After that, you can either Mount VHD File in Windows 7 or Boot from VHD File to Windows 7

Following those general instructions, you should be able to operate with your VHD image. IF for some reason it does not help, could you please provide me with the exact sequence of actions that lead to the issue you report, so that I can try to reproduce it?

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Best regards,

I have three backup images of windows Windows on one my hard disks, that is not the system disk.
System disk is on an 128 GB SSD.
1. Windows 8 only
2. Windows 8 with all my applications, and
3. Windows 8.1 with all those applications after updating to the latest.
But none of these images appear before me when I attempt to convert them to Acronis image. Please see the attached screen capture.
My product Ref No is : '60198726'
But unfortunately before this purchase when I used the trial version I had succeeded in converting them to Acronis image.
There are no helping posts in the support forums.
My OS is WIndows 8.1 64 bit, with 8 GB of RAM.
Please advise.
