Dell XPS 12 with SSD fails midway thru full backup
I have a new Dell XPS 12 with a 256GB SSD running Windows 8.1. I am replacing an XPS 15 that was about 4 years old. I was using ATI 2014 without issue to backup the older XPS to an external WD MyBook USB drive and the laptop had a 256GB samsung drive.
When backing up the new XPS 12, including ESP and Windows partitions on the C drive, it simply locks up about halfway thru the process. When it happens, the light on the external WD drive goes solid and the whole process dies. I can successfully backup a 5GB document directory. I also run a daily cloud backup of the document directory and this works fine.
I am not getting an error in the log and have to hard boot the laptop to recover control of the OS. It sort of semi-locks up where I have mouse control, but apps are non responsive.
I have not experienced any problems with the machine otherwise, but I have run a chdsk to look for drive errors. None were found.
Ideas?
Kent

You might have a system file error and not a drive error causing the problem. Try running SFC /SCANNOW from admin command prompt and see if that helps.

Unfortunately, I only have an SSD on the laptop, it is not a cache setup. I am also running the Intel Rapid Start technology, but this disables itself at boot and I' not sure why. I'll try the SFC idea.
Thanks,

I ran this and no errors, but than you for the tip. I am now suspicious of the Intel Rapid Start technology and will look into this with Dell.

Make sure that your system is running the latest version of IRST as outdated drivers from previous versions are known to be issue with some systems hardware and OS's.
You may also make certain that your bios is up to date as this can effect things as well.

None of this is helping. IRST is all updated. Still can't backup the disk.

Kent,
In your BIOS make sure that your SATA settings are set AHCI Mode. If not this would or could explain why IRST disables itself at boot.
