Questions Re:Recovery procedure.

Thread needs solution

-
Greetings, all....
I need a warm fuzzy feeling from one or more knowledgeable soles concerning the recovery procedure, using the bootable recovery disk.

First, the setup: Windows7, 64 bit, ATI 2010 build 5055 installed, recovery disk is the .ISO file from the web site, which is build 6053. Three internal SATA drives, one external eSATA used for ATI images. I do regularly two types of images -- complete system disk image (C: and D: partitions) and also a system partition (C:) only. All are always with 'validate after completion' checked, and the log always indicated everything went well! Data partitions on other drives are just cloned.

My questions relate to recovering the system partition (C:). My plan is to use the active primary partition on one of the other drives as a "TEST" location for recovery testing of the system partition, as I have been advised that is the only way to know for certain that the recovery function will be reliable if needed when disaster strikes!

Drives:
Drive 0 -- C:(System), Active, primary, system --- D:(WorkingData), Logical

Drive 2 -- E:(SysBkUp), Active, Primary --- F:(Data02), Logical

Both C:(system) and E:(SysBkUp) are the same size -- 60 GB.

My question are:
1. Doing a recovery of the C:(System) backup image to the E:(SysBkUp) partition, with the partition and MBR checked, will that partition be over written, and therefore become a duplicate of C:(System), or should it be cleared first? Also, will it then be bootable if selected via BIOS boot drive selection?

2. And this is my MAIN worry -- What hazards exist for damage or loss of the F:(Data02) partition? Is there any difference in using the "system partition only" backup image, or the "full system disk" backup image with only partition C: and MBR selected??

Note: And, yes, I know the drive letters differ using the recover disk, but the labels are good!

I have booted the recovery disk and stepped through the recovery procedure, right up to the "finish" step, but these questions lingered, so I was fearful of pulling the trigger and shooting myself in the foot. (Loosing the data02 partition, even though it is cloned)

Thankful for any advice and guidance...... Bob

You have the ideal system (with an eSata port) and build of True Image to run the tests. I'm using a similar system, same OS, and the same build 5055.
If you can swing it, it will make testing a whole lot easier if you can use the drive on the eSata port for testing. So maybe temporarily transfer those Images to one of the internals and recover the Image you want to test to the eSata drive. Windows will boot from it.

For the Data02, I would keep a separate backup of it but NOT using True Image if, in fact, it is only data. Use something like Karen's Replicator or SyncBack.

For restoring the C (System), I have checked only the C (and not the MBR), restored it to another drive and it booted ok.

Thanks for the reply...

Yes I do have the Data02 backed up, it would just be a lot of trouble to loose either copy.

So it did restore to a primary partition without bothering a following logical partition?
