Clone a single partition

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have True Image Home 10.0 (build 4.871) and Disk Director Suite 9.0 (build 554).
I would like to clone my XP partition from my first HD to an unpartinioned space on my second HD and make it bootable.
Is this possible?

Thanks!

You cannot use the clone feature because TrueImage only clones at disk level--not partition level.

You can however, accomplish the same by creating a disk option backup and then restoring only the xp partition to the new drive.

Perform the restore when booted from the TI Rescue CD and disconnect the source drive before first bootup following the restore.

Your best chance of success is to put the target in its intended boot position before the restore.

Is there no way to clone only the C: partition on a multi-partition drive?

The C: drive has to be "cloned", because of things like the registry that can't be just copied.

However, I want to manually copy all my data partitions to defrag them.

Imaging only the one 75G partition wouldn't take that long then I could use my system again and start copying the rest of the partitions.

As I stated in post #1, it is possible to achieve but not using the clone command. The partitition restore option is jsut as powerful and is the preferred method of moving from one disk to another.

Use TrueImage to create a backup of desired partition.
On the target disk, manually create whatever additional partitions are needed.
Then use the TrueImage partition restore feature and restore the backup into the newly created partition. If you want it bootable, it may take some additional work as the new partition will be in a different position than the original was.

OK, thanks. Was hoping to avoid double copy (backup then restore).

So I put my new drive in the ultrabay, partition it, including what will be my new C:.

Then back up my old C: to a 2nd or other partition in the ultrabay.

Then umm restore that partition from then 2nd drive 2nd partion to 2nd drive first partition.

But since it isn't a clone, will I lose my XP drive serial # and have to re-validate? Or is that actually in the partition (not drive) so I'm OK?

(I seem to recall a prev cloning program that had a [x] copy MBR option, and if NOT checked, XP would complain it is on a new machine; if checked I was OK; I used your wonderful Acronis Editor (now part of Disk Director Suite, I believe? For those looking over our virtual shoulders) to patch it, and then XP was happy (and so was I).

Remember, the backup is just a file and it can be stored anywhere there is room such as an external drive.

As for your serial and revalidation. Most likely the answer is yes you will need to revalidate. But perhaps there are other alternatives.

What else is on the second drive. Is it data only which could be moved to an external etc so the 2nd drive could be completely empty.

If yes, then you could restore the existing system onto a blank 2nd drive and your new system would be bootable. Just be sure you backup type is one in which you have the disk option checked so it will include the disk ID, etc.

Then maybe later the extra contents of the old 2nd disk could be copied back again.

Or, perhaps I am not following what you are wanting to do as I do not know the contents of the existing 2nd drive. Mabe you want a dual boot system and my suggestion may not be what you want.

Just to be safe, be sure you have a backup where you checkmark the disk so the entire disk is backed up and having such a backup will enable you to move to a new or larger disk. Cloning is not required as a new disk can be created from the a disk option backup.
