Universal Boot Media Builder

Thread needs solution

I am about to upgrade the motherboard and CPU on my desktop.

The PC is running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit)

I plan to use the Acronis Universal Boot Media Builder software to do this. Which would be the best bootable media option to use, to maximise the chances of a successful booting up of the PC with the replacement motherboard and CPU in place?

Thanks and best regards,

This depends on whether the PC is a brand name one or from a computer shop/home made.

If a brand name PC, probably CD, otherwise a USB stick would be fine. It is possible to use a USB stick on OEM machines, but you will need to disable Secure Boot (as most OEM PCs will be UEFI firmware based), and there may be some extra steps that will need to be taken to allow the OEM installed boot security to work on an external stick.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your response.

My PC is home built based on an Asus M4N68T motherboard, with an AMD Phenom II X2 560 processor.

I am upgrading to a bigger case ( NZXT Phantom 410 ) utilising an Asus Crosshair IV Formula motherboard with an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor. ( Not exactly cutting edge, but it will do what I want it to do ). All other hardware from the old case will be transferred to the new case, i.e. HDD, DVD drive, RAM, PSU, Graphics Card etc.

Could you please clarify the following points regarding the USB stick requirements:

1. Should the USB stick be empty. i.e. no other files on it ?

2. What data will be written to the USB stick ?

3. What size USB stick will be required ?

Thanks and Best Regards,

SGS

1. Doesn't matter, the stick will be formatted, so anything already on the stick will be lost.

2. The Linux kernel and True Image files required to boot and run the Linux version of True Image.

3. 1GB is more than enough.

There is an alternative to formatting the stick. There is software from RMUSBPREP (amongst others) that will boot ISOs. Instead of Asking True Image to place the recovery files on the USB stick, you can ask it to make an ISO, then with an RMPREP USB stick, just drag the ISO on to the stick, and you can store other files as well as other bootable ISO files. IF you wished.

Hi again Colin,

Just an afterthought:

If I am relocating my existing hard drive ( Win 7 Pro 64 bit ) , memory, graphics card and power supply into a new case (where the only difference in setup will be an upgraded motherboard and CPU ) will I still need to use Acronis Universal Boot media Builder?

I have been advised that I just need to install the old components in the new case, then boot the system up with the Win 7 installation disc in the drive. If the system does not boot up first time, then choose the Windows Repair option from the installation CD.

What is your opinion on the above ?

Best regards,

You will need to use the UR media as you need to inject the new video and motherboard drivers.

If this is a problem in finding the drivers in inf format, there is a more complicated method that can be used.
