Suddenly - TIH 10 Problems Locking Partition on D
Using TIH version 10 build 4942 on Windows XP Pro SP3 to do daily full backups of the C and D partitions to a backup location on my G drive. I have been doing this successfully for some time. But suddenly two days ago, backups began to fail to complete. This happens if I manually trigger the backup or if it runs on a schedule. I get a system crash message where Windows offers to send info. In the log I find nothing past the entry stating that it will lock partition D. I have attached such a log as the file 2010-03-01... For comparison, I have attached the most recent successful log as the file 2010-02-27... Perhaps something happened after the early morning backup on 2/27 that is causing troubles. I did copy a large number of files across the network to this computer's D drive and there may have been an automatic update. I have performed both a Windows disk check (on reboot) and recently ran the disk vendor's (WD - SATA) diagnostic program without problems. Any tips on what could be happening or what I can do to get more information? Thanks

Yes. I mentioned the chkdsk in the next to last line in my original posting. There has been no defragmenter use on this computer at all (it is a brand new system). Since the original posting, I found a forum post that speaks about disengaging the Distributed Link Tracing Client service. I did that and that makes no difference either. Any other thoughts or comments? Thanks

Yes I saw that, did you use the /r switch?
If TI can't lock the drive, it would appear that something else is accessing it - or has accessed it and has forgotten to un load the handle.
Does it make any difference if you change this drive (temporarily) to have a different drive letter? In other words will away from standard CD/DVD drive letters.
You don't have any disk compression, disk security utilities, user usage trackers running?
This is a standard version of Windows? By that I mean it hasn't been provided by a work IT department and you are using a SOE image which may have policy restrictions enabled.

Thanks Colin,
I did use the /r switch. Because of this Windows required that it be done during a re-boot. It reported nothing but a couple index fixes (which I find very common). Even after fixing these, ATI had the same problem.
I am not sure about the locking question. I rather doubt that Acronis uses the term in its log in the strict sense that I, as a programmer, would use it. I say this because Acronis is designed to work even when files on the disk are in use. So I'd think it should support working even when locks are in place.
No disk compression. No utilities save AVG Free. But I have that running on other systems with ATI and have no problems.
This is just plain, old XP Pro SP-3. Nothing special at all or significantly different from my other computers similarly configured but lacking this problem.
Thanks, David

Please ignore this. Must have been too quick on the trigger.

Well, I think I figured this out. The culprit appears to have been some nVidia chipset drivers. Once uninstalled, TIH and AVG were able to again access the drive without problems. Sorry for the bother.

Once you're sure, could you post the version and build numbers of the chipset drivers?
