Hard Disk does not boot after restoring image
Hi,
I'm using Acronis True Image Home 11.
I have a problem with the following situation:
Hard Drive 1:
- Manufacturer: Western Digital
- ca. 200 GB capacity
- preinstalled and prepartioned by the pc manufacturer
- contains the following partitions:
1. 7,8 MB unformatted
2. 150 GB NTFS formatted system partition which is bootable / Partition is not signed as active (no green flag, just grey ???)
3. 50 GB unformatted
This hard drive is now doing mysterious noises so I want to replace it by a new one and smash it or something. So I quickly did a full backup by selecting the whole drive.
Hard Drive 2:
- manufacturer: Western Digital
- ca. 300 GB capacity
Now I dismounted the first hard drive (put out of the PC) and replaced it by a new 300 GB hard drive. I restored the image of the first hard drive by selecting the whole drive (not the single partition only). After the image was restored successfully via network the pc did not boot from the new hard disk.
So I used Acronis Disk Director and formatted the whole hard drive, created one new single NTFS (standard) partition and set the partition active. Now I restored the image of the first hard drive again by selecting the bootable NTFS partition only. But the pc did'nt still boot. I was confused a little bit because I thought that ATI restores all drive information including MBR and MFT and everything if I select the whole drive.
So I prepartioned the new hard drive like the old one as shown above ( 3 partitions) and restored the system partition from the image. But the pc didn't boot.
Now I mounted booth hard drives in the pc and copied the first hard drive by cloning it directly to the second hard drive. I dismounted the first hard drive and now the pc boots from the second hard drive.
So what happens if the second hard drive crashes too in a view months? I don't expect this but what's if... In this case I will not have a source which can be cloned.
And a very funny thing is I tried to restore the system partition again and now it works, the pc boots. After cloning the first hard drive the image restoring seems to work fine.
I really don't understand this. Can anyone explain me this?
Thanks a lot...
(Sorry for my bad english, I need to improve my english skills :)

Too late now but I would have looked at the non-booting computer with the TrueImage and checked to see if the drives had drive letters assigned to the boot drive and if the disk was marked as active.
I would also have looked inside the BIOS at drive selection. While it should have selected the single drive automatically, there have been reports where it has not.

HELP!
Is cloning the hard drive the one and only way to move the boot partition from one hard drive to another keeping the new hard drive bootable?
Are some Acronis developers or admins out there who can help me?
Thanks...
