Bitlocker backup issue - always backing up 'sector by sector'
Hello,
I just installed Acronis True Image 2015 (trial) over my previous Acronis True Image 2014 installation.
I found that I can no longer backup my system partition (SSD 128GB with Bitlocker encryption) the way I would like to.
The problem is that ATI2015 is backing up partition 'sector by sector' even with this option unchecked in backup options.(attachment 'backup-options.png')
When I select the partitions to backup next to the system partition I see 'None' as filesystem.(attachment 'partitions_0.png')
The result is that the backup is very large (over 60GB) for partition where only ~42GB are used.(attachment 'system-partition.png')
I had this issue earlier when I used Acronis True Image 2014 and then installed Acronis Disk Director 2012, but after uninstall of ADD2012 and reinstallation of ATI2014 it worked normally.
I tried fully uninstalling Acronis True Image(restarted system), installing again(restarted system) and trying to create new backup and launch it - same issue.
I'm currently running Windows 8.1 x64(fully updated).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been having the same problem. Have been a paid member since 2009 and this is the absolute first problem I've ever had with Acronis and it is devastating. It makes it almost impossible to keep up with hard drive requirements.

I don't know the reasons of the changes. I can suppose this default behavior is the best approach with new UEFI/GPT Bitlocker configurations, or maybe it is just a bug. I don't know.

Problem Solved! I went back to Acronis 2014 and everything just works!! If you don't own the older version try buying a copy on eBay or something. It didn't take 30 minutes to do a full backup of my 254 GB SSD and the backup used on 104 GB of space. If Acronis 2015 is causes all this hell over UEFI/GPT Bitlocker configs then go back to or buy Acronis 2014 or wait until a compatible new version comes out. I remember an earlier version of Acronis had a problem with truecrypt once and they eventually fixed it. This stuff with Acronis 2015 will probably be fixed eventually also.

Uh, does anyone know if this is fixed already with the TIH 2015 - 6525 build? Using bitlocker on a Win8.1pro x64 would be quite important for me as truecrypt whole disk encryption is no option for Win8 anymore. Win7+TIH2011+TC was fine...

The problem is not fixed in Acronis True Image 2015 build 6525. I hope Acronis will fix it soon. This is really annoying.

Agreed. I went back to 2013 and had no problem. Instead of an 800+ GB backup I am down to 108 GB.
Windows 8.1 x64, UEFI system.

G2015,
Have you attempted a recovery of your backup with 2013?

This must be what my issue is. My incremental backups are HUGE since switching to 2015. I have bitlocker enabled,

When will this issue be solved? I have also BitLocker enabled and it's really hard to create a backup in decent amount of time.
We've been waiting for the solution for more than two months...

I'm also having this issue with Bitlocker drives. Backup functionality is near useless as it takes forever to do the backup. Disappointed in how long it has been without a fix from Acronis. Besides being larger, does any know if the backups are at least still usable?

Actually I took this up with Acronis FOUR months ago now - they had me running tests for DAYS - they then said Bitlocker always involves a sector-by-sector backup in TI 2015. They were passing it to their development department. I've posted their reply to me twice on the forum. But ... when will they do something about it!

I have the same problem as well on an SSD and it even appears during the backup process it is writing to the SSD as well which makes no sense considering that there is no app that is running that will write data.
Come on Acronis you have know about this problem since December according to your KB file surely you have a fix available?

I really hope they have asap! I bought this TI 2015 licence for one PC which is - of course - encrypted.
I'm quite annoyed this has not been fixed by now. It works according to comments already in the 2014 version, so the code should be available!

This is absolutely ridiculous that this isn't fixed yet. It's been over 6 months, and this bug isn't patched. I use bitlocker on all of my drives, and had to revert to TrueImage 2014. The entire product is useless to me until this is fixed.

I do not use Bitlocker but MS's Surface Pro 3 comes with the drive encrypted but unlocked (check the odd unlock and exclamation point icon for the drive in Explorer) so now I too must go backwards to 2014 as my 525Gb drive takes 8 hours to back up even though I have 120gb of active files!
Come on Acronis - you are better than this

I'm seriously disappointed by Acronis =(
I never thought they would identify such an issue AFTER release and then not fix it for over half a year.
Honestly: Is somebody still working on that issue or not?

I just started using bitlocker and ran into this problem. It is now 5-30-2015 is there a fix for it?

Reportedly there will be 1 more updated release of TI 2015 that will contain a fix for this issue. Release date for the update is unknown at this time.

Thanks a lot for your response! I'm glad Acronis is still working on that fix... :)
Please keep us up to date with latest infos about it!

Sorry, but it seems like that updated release from last week (Update 2) does NOT fix the bug according to the release notes... quite disappointing!

Very disappointed with Acronis, all this time waiting for an update and still no fix for this issue. There is absolutely no excuse for taking this long. After this experience, I'm done with Acronis.

8 months with no fix still, not a happy Acronis Customer. After having bought the latest version every year for the last 10 years or so time to re-evaluate where to next.
It is crazy that the previous version works fine and they cannot find a way to fix it. They must have rewritten the code from scratch and lost the source code for the 2014 version...

I get the impression that enough people have not complained so they feel like it is cheaper to not fix it. I have used this program since before it was every called Acronis (about 15 years) and I am also very disappointed and will be looking for a replacement. I really like the program but since I use bitlocker it is really useless to me.

For me too!!!

It seems like true image 2016 was released today. Hopefully Bitlocker integration is now fixed.
This was a waste of 2015 to me- I never even used it once after I bought it. Very upset with how this was handled.
I will post back if it isnt fixed in 2016...

Good news, I am using Acronis True Image 2016 build 5576 and I can report that incremental backup is now working as expected.

Hello mehrdad,
I would recommend you to install a trial version of Acronis True Image 2016, as it containes many fixes for the reported issues with Bitlocker. Please also check the following article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/56619
Thank you,

Dear Ekaterina Surkova,
Thank you for getting back to my problem. you know i paid a software maybe need it maybe not just in case of disatster. back ups sector by sector was exactly 1TB(lots of room needed) and when it happend to recover it failed! I tried few days, lots of times,,,and was impossible to recover data.!
I bought Macrium reflec,. and an old laptop to test.. i made few partitions. I encriped system and everything with bitlocker and made an image(was almost 4 times faster than Tru eimahe), then I used partion tools, I delete every partion, format all, and run Reflect Boot,,,amazingly it reecoverd everything back in half an hour!
I was a big fan on Acronis, but they have a very bad customer service, no one reploied to my problkem first for 2 weeks. and if as you saying 2016 version has fixed, they should offer for free! bitlocker encryption is nothing new from 2016!
thank yo uanyway, but I wont take the chance for 2nd time...reflect is doing fine for now...even free version...U can give it a try..the diffrentce between free version and paid is your back up wont be encrypted!
Thanks agaoin

so if they have a fix how long people who paid for software have to wait and why they do not offer fix for free..Bitlocker is nothing new just come up last year!!
I think acnoris made lots of money and do not do a good job any more.,..all you see coming up on searching for a bestback up imagin software is becouse lot of froum and whatever...They are lots of free software do the job with biltlocker, less space and much fastrer..I already tried 2 of them
