MBR missing issue cannot boot into windows please help

Thread needs solution

System Recovery options tries to reapair it but it doesnt work

this is what it lists:

[bold]Name: {bootmgr}
Identifier: {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}

the followig startup options will be added:
Name: win 7 ultimate (recovered)
Path: windows
windows device: Partition=D: (439221 MB)

Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery\45a1406d-5dd2-11e1-a3f8-92e6915fe380\Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=D: (439221MB)

A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as: C:\Boot\BCD.Backup.0004[/bold]

When I hit repair: windows says "Failed to save startup options.

I try to use start up repair, after it attempts to repair I get this message
StartupRepair Offline and bunch of other porblems

When I use command promt and type

bcdedit / enum all

I get this:
The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The requested system device cannot be found

What Can I do to fix this issue please?
Thank you

Greetings,
This appears to be a windows support issue. If this is a result of an operation you performed with Acronis, PLEASE provide us with your system specs, hard drive partition layout, history/operation you were performing, (full disk image restore, partition restore) etc, so we can better understand what you were trying to do and what happened. The more information you provide the easier it might be for someone to help.

my system specs are:
Gigabyte GA-X58-UD3R\corsair RM850w, 16gb Vengance memory, Ati 5600 video card, Samsung 840 Pro SSD, Win7 Ultimate

there was a power outage and I was playing a game Total War Rome.
when the power came back and I turned my comp. it asked for Win7 becuases it couldnt boot even into Safe Mod. and I had those messages above. I used acronis but I am not sure if it is related?
where do I seek help then?

From your description of the symptoms, your Master Boot Code or Boot Manager partition may have been damaged as a result of the power failure.

You might try using BOOTREC to repair the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the HDD.

BOOTREC utility is available from the Windows Install disc or you can boot up the PC onto a Windows System Repair disc. If you boot to the Repair disc, don't select the "Automatic Fix Problems" option. That often won't repair MBR, Boot Mgr, or BCD Store issues.

Here's a link to some BOOTREC iinfo:

http://support.microsoft.com/KB/927392

I recently used it to repair both of my HDD's after a Cloning error with the /fixmbr parameter

to rebuild the MBR, remove the existing BCD file and rebuild the BCD Store, you can use the following CMD dialogs in the CMD console:

This is the first one I'd try. This one often repairs common MBR issues by writing a good MBR to the HDD in the event that the original MBR was corrupted by a power interruption, cloning error.

> bootrec /fixmbr

That may be all that's required to repair your HDD to bootable Windows status. If that doesn't work, you can proceed further:

> bootrec /rebuildbcd

There are a number of sequences that can be used but without knowing your specific HDD booting issue, a complete command path is risky to recommend for your HDD.

From reading your posts, I'm assuming that your PC won't boot into Windows. Are you seeing an error code on your screen when trying to boot into Windows? For example, a common error message that is generated when there's a problem with the MBR or Boot Mgr is this code:

0xc000000e

0xc0000098 NoOsInstalled that what it says
I see that there is a partition and windwos are installed but no matter what I do it still doesn work.

I tried bootrec /rebuild and fixmbr etc...

nothing works

seems that I have a driver issue

the error code says this

File: MVS91xx.sys

Status: 0xc0000098

I have a marvel driver that makes it not to boot

boot critical file C:\mvs91xx.sys is corrupt

The file you reference is disk controller driver file for the onboard Marvell disk controller. The link below may be of some help. Additionally, do a google search using the file name for more information.

http://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/mvs91xx-sys

Thank you
I checked it and now I know what it is. looks like file got corrupt. but how to erase it or replace the file. is it possible?

We assume you do not have a back up of your system? This would solve the problem.

You now appear to be at a dead end. Windows setup cannot identify your disk, although it seems to know there is a windows partition on the drive

Scoop had you on the right track

You've tried start up repair, fix MBR, performed a scan for repairable installs (enumerate all) and bootrec /scanos, and tried the /rebuild switch in an attempt to re-add the missing entries for the existing boot partition. This failed. I suspect other corruption exists that is keeping you from recovering. You can replace the missing or corrupt marvell driver file file from a command line, but I don't think this is the problem ultimately (don't know for sure).

What happens if you disable the marvell controller in BIOS and try to restart? See page 86 of your MB user guide:
GSATA 6_7/IDE Controller under the Integrated Peripherals - Disable, F10 to Save and exit

I doubt it will work, but it should take the marvell controller out of your boot equation. This assumes of course that you are using the ICH10R primary intel controller for your boot device. Maybe you can confirm this for us.

At this point, I think you are looking at a repair install of windows. Depends on the extent of damage to the OS. You may want to make a manual back up of your saved game progress in Rome Total War. Copy those off to a safe place.

Post recovery suggestions:
-Implement a back up strategy, and perform regularly
-Purchase a UPS

Kontik,

If you are working on a desktop machine you should have other available SATA ports on your machine that do not use the Marvell controller. Reference your motherboard manual or the support site of your machines manufacturer to locate what ports are available and which controller runs them. Once you have determined which ports are not controlled by the Marvell controller attach your drive to one of those ports. If there are no other issues this should allow you to boot your machine. If you can get that far then you can use Windows device manager to update the driver for the Marvell Controller and at that point reattach your hard drive to the Marvell port. You might need to set your hard drive as the primary boot device in your bios but I would say that should not be necessary in this case.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice.

so far I tired disabling sata 6/7 ports that controlled by Marvel controller still says the same problem.
next I tried different SATA port so used Intel sata ports still the same error mvs91xx.sys.
interestingly when I plugged into the Intel Sata port when comp POSTed it sees my samsung ssd 840 pro drive but when I plugged it into the Marvel controlled sata 6/7port on the POST it doesn't even list my ssd.
I think my marvel sata port is fried or shorted.

but why Intel sata ports don't recognize the drive I have no idea? I cannot figure this out.

I've read online and some sites suggest to go into C:windows/system32/driver and find that mvs91xx.sys file and remove it to replace it with the different one. but online forums do not tell me on how to do that using command promt.
does any of you know how to do that? basically update the controller in command promt like you would in device manager

at this point I am so frustrated that I want to kill that marvel controller and burn it. I am never going to buy anything with marvel what so ever.

I do not know what to do anymore.

Hello Kontik,
If you are not comfortable using a command line, it may be possible for you to slave the drive in another machine and delete, copy or modify files on the non-booting disk that way.

We can't comment on the integrity/condition of your hardware. You can download the marvell controller drivers from the Gigabyte website. Its listed as "Gigabyte GSATA2 Controller". Once again however, I wish to point out that there may be more going on with your drive that what you are seeing. If more than the mvs-91xx-sys is damaged or corrupt, and you are also unable to get the drive to boot from the ICH10R, then you are looking at a repair or re-install of windows as I mentioned previously. I would replace the marvell file showing as missing or corrupt and attempt to boot. If this does not resolve the issue, then a repair or re-install is the next step.

If you decide to perform a fresh install, please connect/configure the 840 SSD on the ICH10R primary controller. The marvell controller only has 1 PCIe lane for both ports. You will achieve the best performance with your boot drive connected to the intel south bridge. This is another discussion, but please trust me on this. Good Luck

The only way I know of to fix your issue would be if you have another computer that you can use, attach your hard disk to that computer as a secondary drive. Using Windows File Manager navigate to C:\windows\system32\drivers. Rename the mvs91xx.sys to mvs91xx.sys.bak. Once completed exit the File Manager, shutdown the computer, remove your disk and reinstall it into your machine attached to an Intel port preferably the Sata 0 or Sata 1 port, attempt to reboot.

This action should make the offending file appear as an invalid system driver file so Windows will not run it on boot. That in turn should allow the Intel drivers for the Intel ports to load and allow system to boot.

If the above proves successful you can attempt to reinstall the Marvell driver file to your system. As far as your Marvell posts being fried I hardly think so given what you report. Again yiou can use Device manager to update the Marvell controller driver file.

There is one other file that the Marvell controller uses named mvxxmm.sys. This file may be corrupted as well and the above procedure will work for that file as well.

I agree with Shadowsports that using the Intel ports and the ICH10R would yield the best performance on your machine.

Thank you guys I fixed it.

I was able to erase 2 files from C:\windows\syster32\drivers folder. how did I do that in windows recovery before I clicked on the Load drivers and was able to get into mycomputer etc...
removed mv91xx.sys and another mvxxx.sys file

by doing that I was able to reboot into windows. so after all this the problem was not even with Master Boot Record it was all Marvel controller driver crapp. I hate Marvel what a pain.

I updated the marvel driver but here is the interesting thing, I think my marvel SATA port on the MOBO are fried. the two 6GB marvel sata ports do not recognize any HDD no mater what I plug in into them. Win7 does not see them at all if I put boot drive or any other drive.

I am going to build a new pc I am fed up with my mobo and marvel controllers.
next is Asus Z97-A mobo with intel chipset 6gb sata drives

Thank you again for all your time and help. I am very much appreciate it.

Glad you got things sorted out. We appreciate the feedback. The X97A is a nice board. I know it's hard to walk away from a socket 2011 investment for Haswell 1150, but the X58 platform is now fairly dated.
