Cannot Install in Win7
I installed Acronis 2010 trial version, just after installing Win7 Home Premium x64. Due to another issue I was using the startup repair utility native to Win7. It offered a system restore option and I checked for which programs would be affected. It showed True Image and I assumed it would be uninstalled, which it appeared to be. However, when I tried to re-install I get the following error-
"The error was encountered while the installation.
Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot be continued. In control panel, open add/remove programs to configure or remove the existing version of this product."
The terrible English at the beginning is not mine!
ATI was not listed in Add/Remove programs.
I have spent the last two or three days using proprietary registry and system cleaners, manually removed all registry entries and files/ folders. I have run scannow and chkdsk. Acronis own cleanup utility will not run on Win7(without downloading other stuff and messing about which I am not prepared to do. It will be easier to find another product that just works.) Windows Uninstall Cleaner did not show ATI. I have used the context menu to run the installer as administrator, tried to install in safe mode and with everything I can think of disabled (anti-virus, WAUC etc.) the message is always the same. Somewhere, on the HDD or in the registry is hiding a file/reference telling the installer that an old version is installed, but it isn't. Has anybody encountered this and found a solution? I don't want to re-install, and System Restore cannot be undone when activated from Startup Repair.

Thanks for the reply, Scott. You'r correct, it almost surely is Windows botch. Trouble is, I've downloaded a couple of programs from Giveaway of the Day and they are a one-time, time sensitive install and if I do a clean install now, I lose these professional versions. It may be that I will have to lose them, but I'll try a little longer to see if anybody comes up with anything. I only need it to restore certain folders from my XP image.
I tried the ATI boot disc, but my wireless USB mouse and keyboard won't work with it. I'll have to see if I can borrow a wired mouse and Kbd. Should be able to restore what I need then and use Windows 7 native backup. I've read it's pretty good. I'd appreciate anybody's views, if they have tried it.

Hello,
First of all, I'd like to thank Scott for his suggestions.
Paul, I'll do my best to help you to install Acronis True Image Home 2010, however, I need an installation log file to find out what exactly prevents the software from installing correctly.
Please gather MS Installer log file as described at this KB article and attach it to your reply.
Additionally, the issue with wireless mouse/keyboard was fixed in the latest version of bootable media that you can download from your account on our website:
- Log in to your account (if you do not have one, you will need to create it);
- Once logged in, click My Products & Downloads:
- Scroll down to the registered product and click Bootable Media:
- Click Download:
-
Acronis Bootable Media will be downloaded as an ISO file. See Burning an ISO Image.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

Good news. Problem solved. Activating the REAL admin account allowed me to install Acronis for all users. This doesn't explain why there was something lurking in the registry or the HDD preventing installation from my 'normal' admin account, yet allowed it through the 'real' admin account.
The resolution suggests is it is due to privalages, yet the error message says otherwise.
Still, thanks for your help and it's worth remembering for future install issues.

Thanks, Ilya.
Presumably, if I did a clean and proper uninstall now, (though I don't intend trying it!) it would also remove the issue.
I'm just glad I didn't have to go through a clean install an lose the free professional programs I had from Giveaway of the Day!
