I can't boot

Thread needs solution

Dell Dimension E520
Vista Home
Installed Acronis Disk Director 10 a year ago
Today I installed the OS Selector app because I wanted to add XP to my PC
Using Disk Dir, found unallocated 50 GB, created a primary partition there and marked it active
Rebooted
I expected to get a message saying no OS found at which point I planned on putting in my XP install disk and installing it to the 50G partition
Instead, during bios screen, I get 2 messages saying press ESC or F6 for various acronis boot functions, but neither key does anything and then the computer stops booting and beeps continuously.
I have used various partition boot disks and confirmed my Vista partition is marked active.
My PC is now a paperweight...

If you're using an old build of DD 10, you may need to update it.

You should be able to restore booting to Vista by setting the Vista partition Active and restoring the MBR.

  • Use DD to set the Vista partition Active.
  • Boot to the Vista DVD, enter Repair Mode, then the Command Prompt, and run the following command: bootrec /fixmbr

Vista's automatic repair may also be able to fix the problem.

Thanks MC, I can boot now. You're right, I've got build 2160...guess I underestimated how long ago I installed DD. I'll see if I can find a download to get me to the latest.

Hello Shadow,

As I can see your product is registered. That means you have permanent access to product download in your personal account at Acronis.

Please take a look at this article for more details.
