1 hd to ssd working, one not...not all data appears migrated

Thread needs solution

Using the migrating to SSD using backup and recovery method as recommended in Acronis 2015 help has had mixed results. On a Dell laptop with a failing hard drive, recovery was perfect even thought a sector of the failing disk could not be read and needed to be ignored when creating the backup that the ssd was recovered from.

On a Dell tower machine, the disk backup showed no errors and restore to the ssd from the bootable media went, seemingly, without a hitch.

The Dell tower boots, but hangs on trying to programs such as adobe acrobat pro.

On both machines, both Google apps (Chrome settings, etc.) and Microsoft apps (Windows Live) needed to be logged into as if they were on a new computer. Interesting, I would think a full disk backup would not require that.

So, on the machine that does not work, I have the old hard drive out and the ssd in per Acronis instructions, but do not have a machine I can use.

One other note of interest:  Both machines were backed up using a usb3 drive.  To restore, I had to use usb2 since, apparently, usb3 is not supported in the Acronis boot (bummer).

Suggestions?

A couple of things to watch for:
- when you do the backup, make sure you include all partitions. Ideally, do a disk level selection in the what to backup
- when you restore, use the recovery CD. Disconnect the old disk, put the new SSD on the same connectors.
- Never reboots with both the SSD and the old disk at the same time in the machine until you have fully booted successfully on the SSD.

Some applications use different DRM technologies that include disk information, so it is not a surprise that some credentials and keys do not work any longer. You might have to reactivate these applications and it is better to deactivate them on the old disk to avoid complications. For example, Windows might not reactivate, but you can reactivate using an automated phone line. Norton might have to be reinstalled, etc.

I did do a whole disk backup...that should have included all partitions.

I did put the ssd on the same connectors.

The old disk is out of the machine.

I did see a note in Acronis help about possibly needing to resize partitions on machines with hidden partitions, but have not been able to find any additional information on this topic.

Other than putting the old disk back in and going through the process again, not sure how to move ahead.

Thanks

To manually control the resizing of partitions, check out Grovers' guides in the left navigation panel.

The MBR+Track0 considerations are irrelevant for a UEFI/GPT set up, but the other principles stand.

Don't change the size of hidden partitions, and don't change their location (the order of the partitions on the disk).

Since the total data use of the old disk is less than half the space available on the new disk, I don't understand why it might be necessary to resize any of the partiions...any insights appreciated.

The size of the partitions is always adjusted to optimize the size of the new disk. The size of the data is only one parameter here, that counts mostly when the target disk is smaller for obvious reasons. Typically, when people move to an SSD, the SSD has a smaller size than the original disk so the partitions have to be shrunk to fit the SSD.
You could also try to clone the disk to the SSD. Sometimes cloning end up working better than backing and restore (I don't why, but it happened to me with UEFI/GPT disks). If you try cloning, remember to clone from the recovery CD. Put the new SSD at the same spot as the old disk, and put the old disk on a connector or adaptor. Remember to disconnect the older disk before rebooting after a successful clone.

From what I understand there is some exclusion list somewhere.  I have tried to change the Options when doing the Clone, but it appears that there is nothing excluded.  Does anyone have any idea how to do a TRUE clone?
