Booting from a cd, incorrect user name and password to back up to a different computer on the network
I Downloaded the trial of True Image Home 2010 and cannot, for the life of me, figure out the correct user name and password when trying to save a backup from PC A to PC B. I created a bootable CD to run on PC A becuase i the PC will not even boot up. Everything was going fine until i was prompted for a user name and password for backing up the image on PC B's shared folder. The folder on PC B is shared correctly, according to Acronis support, and I've tried every user name and password I can think of. I messed around with workgroups and domains for a time, but got frustrated and gave up. Any help would be appreciated.

The PC that I am attempting to back up to is running XP Pro, the Pc that I am using the bootable Cd on is running XP Home. I managed to make my way to those settings and was still not able to back up to the XP pro machine. Also, i tried to connect to the same shared folder with a different laptop and it prompted me for a user name and password and wouldn't let me in from a working notebook. I'm sure i messed something up when i messed with the sharing settings. If i need to I can find a different forum as I'm not sure that this is an Acronis issue. What do you think?

It can be a permission issue. Please see this article for more information and check the appropriate permissions. Also, on the Effective Permissions tab of Advanced Security Settings enter the user you use to access the share and allow all effective permissions.

This is what i tried first (after browsing your support site) when it prompted me for a user name and password the first time. So i followed the directions for setting permissions and it still prompted me for a username and password. After this i tried connecting to my shared folder with a different laptop and was prompted for a user name and password (which i still don't know). So now I'm stuck with a shared folder that i can't utilize for backing up and sharing :P. Perhaps I'm not entering in the correct user name and password, but I've tried machine/server, server/machine, machine/password, user name/password, server/password, etc. What confuses me is that I've never been prompted for a password before. I'd just go to "map network drive" and there it was. Also, I tried setting up a new workgroup with a new name (i have no idea what I'm doing with this). Meaning i changed the workgroup that i was in, i don't have windows server or anything like that. Then i changed the workgroup that the functional laptop was in to the same workgroup the shared folder was in and it still prompts me for a user name and password. I think it might be time for gateway solutions (baseball bat). Any ideas?

Could you please create a new shared folder on your laptop and try to get the access to it from the Windows Pro computer? This will help to localize the issue.
Also, when you tried to access the folder from your laptop, did you try to do it from within Windows or using Acronis Bootable Media?

It's working! I figured out what the issue was form a IT friend. He messed with a few things in the registry of the computer that the shared folder was on and I'm able to back up to this drive from any other computer. He mentioned to me that it was likely that when i installed Acronis True Image Home 2010 on my desktop with the network share that it altered that registry. Wondering what your thoughts were on that?
