Changing External USB Drive Letter

Thread needs solution

I have a USB 2.0 external drive that I occasionally back up to using ATI2014. I have used the Disk Management module to attempt to change the drive's letter to "X" (Windows assigns this drive "D"). I am able to change the drive letter in Disk Management and it shows as "X" when I exit. The drive also shows as "X" in File Explorer. However, whenever I power down or disconnect the drive, Windows changes it back to "D" again on next power-up. Perhaps this is how it should work. I'm not sure.

Is there anyway to prevent Windows from changing the drive letter back to "D"?

What you decribe is that the computer being used is not the computer which originally formated the external disk.

One fix would be to use that computer to format the external and at the same time assign the X.

However, if you have other computers, the x will only hold true for the computer which formatted the drive.
All other computers using this external will have random letters assigned as available on each computer being used.

That worked perfectly! Thank you for the help!
