Acronis VSS and Microsoft VSS Freezing Server

Thread needs solution

Our server freezes when the Acronis VSS service starts up. When the server freezes because of VSS, the “Volume Shadow Copy” service is running with the “Acronis Shadow Copy” service. When the server doesn’t freeze, only the “Volume Shadow Copy” service starts up. The Acronis article titled “Using Microsoft VSS instead of Acronis VSS” shows a solution to the problem. It suggests that you use Microsoft VSS instead of Acronis VSS by adding registry entries. The problem is that the solution is for Acronis 10 Advanced Server and not the version we are using. For our version, Acronis suggests that we turn VSS off in the Acronis article titled "Acronis True Image Echo or the Whole System Hangs on Trying to Back Up a System with VSS."

Acronis stated that “The VSS does not properly handle the VSS snapshot abort operation.” I am aware that the Acronis VSS only uses the Windows VSS service, but maybe they are conflicting with the abortion methods or calling methods. Why can't acronis release a patch to ensure that only the Windows VSS service is running for the Acronis True Image Echo version.

Has anyone experienced this problem and what solutions have you applied to permanently resolve the problem?

Hello Jelani Jenkins,

Thank you very much for bringing up this issue and I will do my best to assist you with it.

Our Development team is currently working on improving the latest version of Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 and we are not planning at the moment to release any updates for Acronis True Image Echo. However, I will definitely submit an enhancement to our Development team about this issue.

If you are using VSS to create images with databases, I can suggest using batch files to suspend databases services temporarily, so that a successful image can be taken. Once the backup starts you can resume those services.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
