USB Stick not "seen" by ATI, USB Hard Disk not "seen" bei MB

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I'm going crazy on this one. I found tons of instuctions on how to apply media builder to an external usb hard disk but none work for me .. though it sounds so simple (e.g. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=176958).

Everyone seems to "see" their usb stick in ATI. I don't .. no matter if I start from CD or use the Windows APP. No matter if I use backup or if I opt to clone a disk. Every one else sees their usb stick device (German example with screen shots: http://www.windowspage.net/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?num=1209982342).

So two things that I'd like to work:
- See my USB hard disk in media builder (it doesn't show .. my usb stick shows though)
- See my USB stick in ATI (there only my hard disk shows)

I tried an older 10 version of ATI and the current one (2010). No chance.

Help!!!

Hans

What size USB stick do you have?

There are USB sticks and then there are USB sticks! :) Manufacturers can make USB sticks report themselves as removable media or as drives.

The USB hard drive is more strange, is this a powered drive or powered by the USB port.

I take it Windows sees all your USB equipment OK?

What format is the USB stick formatted in?

I take it you have the USB drive/stick inserted/switched on before opening up TI.

It can be tricky sometimes to get both Windows and the Acronis programs to see a flashdrive. I have to reset them quite often in testing because of problems like this.

If you have Vista or Windows 7, you can "clean" your flashdrive using DISKPART: Using Vista's DISKPART Program to Create a Bootable Flashdrive

In some cases, only the Safe Mode (SafeMedia) version of TI/DD can see the flashdrive. This is because the BIOS provides the information for the drive in this mode. If it reports it as a hard drive, then it can be seen.

As for booting from the USB hard drive, have you tried using the Grub4DOS method? It's easy to setup and allows you to boot the TI ISO file directly: Using Grub4DOS to Create a Bootable Drive

Yes .. I tried the grub4dos method today. Doesn't work either. Hard Disk is ready - but my machine boots straight into Vista. Same thing with my Win7 Netbook.

For the record: I have another method (that doesn't work for me either):
Download "unetbootin" and use the ATI Iso Image .. Procedure is simple and I guess it will work for everyone else (as usual *sigh*).

Windows uses all my USB-Devices just fine. The challenge is to have a 1 GB partition on my HDD to directly boot into Acronis and backup to that same HDD without needing a stick. So .. basically nice to have.

I am not quite sure how to introduce Diskpart in this process .. maybe writhe the mbr with diskpart and the turn back to the grub4dos files .. or do they need a different mbr?

What is the boot priority setting and order in your BIOS?

If the BIOS has such a setting, does ti have a boot from USB option? - Some do.

Ok .. diskpart was helpful - my usb-stick appeared everywhere now. Thanks for this one. So - I tried the disk cloning method in ATI and was a bit confused because ATI didn't want to use the partition I had also prepared with diskpart. But nevertheless ATI allowed me to select to use the partition 1:1 .. since the USB Stick only has 256 MB .. fine for me.

I now have my USB stick and hard disk ready - just the was I want it. BUT .. booting from the USB stick is fine while the machine doesn't want to boot from my external hard disk.

I guess the Bios settings are ok then .. otherwise it wouldn't boot from the stick in the first place. I'll check the options again right now.

I have one USB powered laptop drive, that will only boot after a PC laptop reboot.

In other words, it isn't recognised as a bootable drive when booting from cold, but if I reboot the laptop or PC at any time after the POST has finished, the drive is recognised and will boot the machine.

This drive has the Acronis bootable components on it, and the drive is split into two partitions - 100MB for the Acronis boot stuff and the other partition for images. Often, the second partition is recognised before the first boot partition even from wihtin Widnows.

I just found the boot manager on my eee pc (which I only have a few days now). The hard disk now boots fine (at least on that machine). Maybe my expectation is wrong. I expeced a usb device to boot if it has a boot record and the correct order is set in the bios (usb first).

You might just need to change the boot priority if the BIOS has this feature.
