Acronis SQL backend server Licensing
I have Acronis Backup 11.5 installed on a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. The install is running the included MS SQL Server 2005 Express and I am wanting to upgrade to an actual SQL server install preferably 2008 R2 or 2012. What licensing will I need for Acronis to function correctly? Do I need a SQL CAL for each device accessing the Acronis server or do I need just one device CAL for the Acronis server itself?

I was wondering what number of MS SQL Server CALs I would need for the Acronis Server to function properly. I will be backing up ~750 networked devices (Workstations). So would I need an MS SQL Server Device CAL for each device being backed up by Acronis or would I just need the one Device CAL for the Acronis Server itself? Or would this be more appropriate question for a Microsoft representative?

Hi Thomas,
Acronis Backup Advanced for SQL product is licensed per physical host. With this license you can backup one physical SQL server (no extra CALs required).
In order to backup workstations you have to have corresponding number of liceneses, for example Acornis Backup Advanced for PC.
More information you can find in Licensing FAQ: http://www.acronis.com/en-us/business/licensing-faq/

Hi Thomas, thank you for clarification!
Only one of Acronis Backup components, and namely Acronis Management Server, communicates directly with Miscosoft SQl Server. Acronis Agents and all other components don't have direct access to Acronis instance in SQL.
But of course I recommend you checking on details related to Microsoft SQL Server licensing with Microsoft representative.
Thank you.

That answers my question perfectly, Anna. Thank you.
