use of ATI 2013 recovery disk on newer sys. which didn't create that disk?
In my continued effort to maximize my chance of recovery from a hard disk disaster- along with using ATI 2015 to produce images to my WD external drive- I asked in a different thread about creating a Windows image---
but also, what if I use my ATI 2013 recovery disk on this newer computer- though the recovery disk was made on a different computer (an old Vista box)- and with the ADtI recovery disk, make an image on the same external drive.
then, if by some bad luck, my ATI 2015 recovery disk fails to recover the system, I could try recovering with the ATI 2013 recovery disk- which would recover the image it created...
so, I guess, the question is--- though the ATI 2013 recovery disk was created on an older computer- would it still work? That is, when the recovery disk is created by ATI (any version)- does ATI customize the recovery disk for that computer so that the mouse and video and other drivers will work, or are they generic drivers that will work sufficient to accomplish the restoration?
yuh, of course I can proceed to test it- but I'm ultra cautious experimenting on my computers- I'd rather get opinions first....
thanks,
Joe

Grover, I trust you are right on this- but, I'm surprised, since, if the backup was created from an ATI 2013 recovery disk- I should think that it would backup the drive regardless of what's on it- then if a restore is attempted, same thing, it wouldn't have to know what's on it- it's just sectors- or is it because the sectors are different with Win 8.1, and thus that would cause the failure?
The point being- I'm curious about why it would fail, as a former amateur programmer. It helps me to understand these complex issues if I have some understanding of what's really going on from a programmer's perspective.
thanks again for your tireless postings in this forum!

PS: how about ATI 2014? I wonder if, having purchased ATI 2011 and ATI 2013 and ATI 2015, Acronis would let me have a copy of ATI 2014? Probably not. It'd be no loss to them if they let me download a copy- but I don't think both can be installed at the same time, right? I do prefer the older user interface- like many others here- and I still use ATI 2013 on my 8 year old Vista system.

The recovery disk is some what generic, meaning it should be able to be booted and run on a system different that where it was created. I've done this in the past and it works. Now recovering a different versions backup image is some thing different. It depends. I've used a 2014 recovery disk to restore a series of files (Not the system) from a backup image from ATI2010. It worked just fine. Now concerning ATI2015, I've restored files from a ATI2015 backup image using an ATI2014 recovery disk. This to worked. I will be testing (as soon as my new harddisk comes in) a full recovery of an ATI2015 backup image using the ATI2014 recovery disk. If it works then I'll have a solution to the USB 3.0 backup recovery issues with ATI2015.

Yes. Only one version can be installed at one time.
If you ask. they may take 2015 and give 2014 as a switch--if that is what you want.

What I was thinking and I probably won't bother- is making a backup with the ATI 2013 recovery disk- and, making an image with it- so that if my last resort was to try to recover with the ATI 2103 recovery disk- I'd have it try to recover the ATI 2013 image, not an ATI 2015--- but, I think this is a case of "thinking too hard"- it's just that I was so traumatized recently with that failed MS update and finally managed to recover with ATI 2015, I'd like as many options as possible, just in case. At least this option, though I won't do it- might work- unless there is some issue with the way Win 8.1 operates and something about the disk structures, as Grover suggested.
