Why Reactivate Office 2010 after Acronis 2015 Recovery on Win 8?

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis 2015, build 6525 on Hp Win 8.1. I did HP Minimized Image Recovery (reinstalls original operating system and hardware drivers). Then I did Acronis 2015 Recovery of a Full backup (validated) which seemed to work successfully.

However, when I tried to open MS Office Word 2010, I had to reenter the Product Key. Then I rebooted and Word 2010 as well as Excel 2010 worked fine. Why is it necessary to re-enter the Office Product Key since Acronis should have backed up and recovered everything? This makes me wonder what else wasn't backed up and recovered?
Thank you,
Ken

Ken:

This is an unintended consequence of Acronis deciding to use Microsoft's VSS as the snapshot manager in TI 2015. Previous versions of TrueImage used a proprietary Acronis snapshot manager that excluded very few files.

Microsoft's VSS has a number of files that it excludes. They are listed in the registry here: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToSnapshot]. If you create an image of your machine from the Windows version of TI 2015, the Microsoft VSS exclusions will apply. These items reduce the size of the image. If you look at the contents of the registry key you'll see that some of the exclusions are office files needed for registration.

If you create your image from the Linux-based Acronis bootable media then these exclusions do not apply since the Acronis snapshot manager is used. If you use the WinPE-based Acronis bootable media, the VSS exclusions for office files are not included in the WinPE registry; only generic exclusions like shadow copies, hiberfile.sys, temp files, etc.

Another option is to remove the exclusions from the registry key that you do not want to be excluded from the snapshot.

Mark,
Thank you for a very informative answer. A couple of questions:
1. I also have ATI2014 which has worked fine. You said that previous versions of TI used a proprietary Acornis snapshot manager that excluded very few files. Does that include ATI 2014? Are the names of those files in the Registry like 2015 or somewhere else?
2. Where do I find the "Linux-based Acronis bootable media"? Can I use this when I schedule my backups? If so, how do I do that? This sounds very helpful.
3. How do I easily find my User Forum entry without scrolling thru the entries? I am signed on to Acronis.com and go to Forums. What I have tried is: Search for the number, e.g., my entry is 89373; Search for the first 3 words of the title. Some months ago, I could go to google.com and key in the forum #, e.g., 89373 and could fine it but that does not seem to work now. Any help would make this forum more user friendly?
4. I have checked the "Notify me when new comments are posted" but I never get notified.
Thank you much,
Ken

Ken:

1. In TI 2014 when you set up a Disk Backup, click on "Backup Options at the bottom left of the window and then on the "Exclusions" tab. The defaults are to exclude tib files and temp files. Although not listed, the program also excludes the Windows paging file pagfile.sys and the hibernation file hiberfil.sys. You can add any other files that you want excluded or remove the defaults.

2. The Linux-based bootable media can be created from TI 2015 using the Bootable Media Creator application or you can download a copy by logging into your account on the Acronis web site. You cannot schedule backups from the bootable media version; you have to reboot your PC with the bootable media and run a backup manually. By doing this you completely bypass Windows and run a standalone operating system to create an image.
