Bootable Media ,etc
Hello,
I have the newest build of ATI home desktop installed on a new computer with Windows 7 Home installed.I have a 250GB external USB drive plugged in and that is where I made my image and plan to make incremental back ups there as time goes on.
I'm trying to create the bootable media on a USB stick-the ISO.The information that goes on the USB stick gets extracted to the computer or the external drive?I am not clear on this when I read any of the tutorials.
I want to be able to boot the computer with the USB stick and access the backups on the external drive to restore. Is this correct?Or are my missing it?
Thank you,if someone could clarify this for me and give me a kick in the right direction,it would be appreciated.

Hello again,I have gotten most of the way through it but I need to know, when he refers to "Flashdrive"is it the external USB Hard Drive,or the CD/DVD Drive?I created the folders and did the extractions, and now I have three files on the DVD-Acronismedia.iso,grldr,and menu.lst.Are they in the proper spot because now its saying "Not Bootable"I'm not sure if I've put them in the right spot, and I'm not sure about the ISO file.I downloaded it from my account ,it wound up on the DVD through the media builder. The ISO folder says it needs Power2Go to open-thats one of the burn programs on my computer-I think that is one of the problems.I need some clarification. Thanks so much!

The ISO format file is a special format for optical disk images. It's a file intended to be burned onto a CD using a CD burner program.
I you want to do something diff than that, than please use Mudcrab's guide.

I assume you're using this guide.
"Flashdrive" refers to the bootable flashdrive being created in the guide. However, if you're using a USB hard drive, it would refer to your USB hard drive. The procedure is the same.
If you want to boot the ISO from Grub4DOS, you need to follow the instructions in Section 1 and Section 3. If you still have problems, please post a screenshot showing the contents of the USB drive and a copy of the menu.lst file.
What you need on the USB drive (as a minimum) is grldr, menu.lst, and the ISO file you want to boot. You may need to reinstall Grub4DOS to the USB drive if you think that didn't come out right.

Mudcrab, really appreciate all your work on this subject. I downloaded the free trial version of ATI Home version yesterday with the hope of creating a bootable clone of my hard drive if/when my internal HD crashes. Dell E1505,T2400,2gRAM,external 320g Seagate HD via USB2.0, Vista Ultimate. I printed out your guide v1.1 Sept 29th 2007 version. I am somewhat new to the technical side and was using the step by step, however the latest version of the software/steps/instructions does not at all match the 2007 version you describe, and by page 11 or 12 , had lost my way. So for those of us that are using the latest version, your two year old guide is fairly useless, keep in mind I am a newbie to the Acronis products. I am not being critical, but an updated guide to the latest version would be a lot more useful to those of us still trying to accomplish this. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

stephen wilson,
I'm not quite sure exactly what the problem is. It sounds like you're just wanting to Clone your drive. You don't need to create a bootable USB hard drive to do that. TI can Clone drives just fine. Perhaps you could provide some more details on what you're trying to accomplish?
In regards to the guide, it is getting dated and I may consider updating it. However, when I started using Grub4DOS on my flashdrives and USB drives, the method used in my guide hasn't had much use by me. It's so much easier to use Grub4DOS, especially when booting multiple versions and/or builds from the same device.

Thanks for getting back so quickly. I am trying to accomplish two things. I bought my laptop used, no recovery disk, and it does not have a burner, just DVD-ROM. First I need to be able to recover my system(O/S, files, etc) if/when I have a problem or HD failure and second to be able to clone my HD to transfer to a new/larger capacity HD I plan to buy soon. Trying to do this as inexpensively as possible, keep in mind I am a newbie and may have unrealistic goals. I tried to do this with the "Complete PC Backup and Restore" feature in Vista putting the backup on my USB HD, reset BIOS to boot from USB device, black screen with curser, yikes! (I know the proper procedure is to boot from your recovery CD, then transfer data), but I thought I would try it anyway as I don't have a recovery CD. After searching the Vista forums for help, I decided my best plan of action given I can't burn a recovery CD, was to try the Acronis cloning system that was recommended by one user. I was hoping this would accomplish both of my goals. So here I am. Are my goals unrealistic? Will the Acronis backup/clone I now have on my external HD boot my system to to transfer my O/S/data to a new HD if I have a problem? Thanks for your help.

If the backup you made was a full and complete backup of the entire disk (including all hidden or boot or diagnostic partitions), then the answer should be yes. See the link below for an illustration as to the type of backup needed.
Disk option backup (Everything copied)
http://forum.acronis.com/sites/default/files/forum/2010/01/7523/backup_…
The yes is also contingent upon backup archive having passed a validation when booted from the TI Rescue CD of the same or newer version that created the backup. Of course, you understand, the only real guarantee of its success is if you test the restore onto a spare disk.
In addition to having workable TI Rescue CD's, I have also made other of my disk drives to be Grub4Dos bootable. This is illustrated via MudCrab's excellent Grub4Dos tutorial using sections 1 and 3. Section 2 not needed. I have a second internal Sata disk; and a USB external disk enclosure; and a 4G Flashdrive to be Grub4Dos bootable. I can boot into either of these drives and select TrueImageHome from my user created boot menu.

GroverH, thanks for helping. When I click on the "Back up my System" option in my free home trial, the Backup Wizard screen looks somewhat different than the example in the link you provided. It does not have a check box for "All Partitions", perhaps because I only have one(just guessing). I am not sure if it includes"all hidden or boot or diagnostic partitions". I only have one HD, 40GB. My" Back up my System" screen shows "Disc1, Cdrive, capacity:35.85GB,used space:24.03GB NTFS. Lower left bottom of the screen has a box "Size to backup:24.01GB", different than the used space:24.03GB in the upper box. Near the lower box is an option to 'Back up sector by sector" which changes the "Size to Backup" to 35.85GB, matching the upper box " capacity", which also activates another check box below it to "Back up unallocated space", which when checked does not change any numbers. I will check out the Grub4DOS option also and then decide how to proceed. Any thoughts on the above description of my options to create the proper backup would be appreciated, thanks again.
