FYI: "My NAS Connections" Only Lists NDAS Devices

Thread needs solution

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why my WD EX2 wasn't in the "My NAS Connections" list. It turns out that it won't, because it isn't a NDAS device, which I hadn't heard of until now.

ATI only supports NDAS devices in this section, which is rarely supported. There is no intrinsic advantage to use one access protocol vs another in theory, so why are you worried about using CIFS/SMB shares?"

This feature is less than unhelpful, and should be retitled to something a little less misleading.

Michael,

NAS is a networked storage device that uses TCP/IP network protocol for connection. NDAS is an old technology that uses LPX for a connection which is why it is rarely supported in current day software.

Network attached devices are supported by TI 2015 as the documentation points out

I myself use an NAS for backup storage purposes. It is not a WD EX2/4 box rather it is a custom built machine I built myself running FreeNAS Linux. I have no issues with True Image seeing that device. You stated in your original post that True Image could see shares on your device, is that not the same as the app seeing the NAS? What is it you are expecting to see when you select NAS from the destination field? If you are expecting to find the machine name WD EX2/4 that's fine but if you do not see it this simply means that your network is not recognizing the name of the device. Have you tried entering the IP address of your NAS into the destination field to see what happens?

It has been my experience that most home based LAN networks have DNS issues which make connection issues a real problem. This may be true in your case as well.

All he was saying is that it should be titled something else. Why not My NDAS connections? I had no idea what a NDAS device was until I was trying to determine the usefulness of Acronis's My NAS Connections section.

Not to scare you or anything, but make sure you try a recovery of the images stored on your WD. I don't know about the EX2 because I was using the MyCloud version. I could easily store the images and open them live in Windows, but they would be deemed corrupted by the recovery CD, whether wireless or Ethernet connection. The workaround was to use the copy in Safepoints on a USB disk to do the recovery. I ended up ditching the MyCloud for this and other reasons and switch to Synology.

I have the WD Ex2 and confirm successful restores at least from boot time recovery functionality. Haven't actually needed to boot the recovery cd yet, but if the same restore were to fail then I would question the cd.
