What to do ? ATI2014

Thread needs solution

Been using ATI2014 on my WIN 7 machine. Introduced a new backup volume 2 days ago. Backup ran with no problems. Backup ran yesterday and failed validation. Scanned the disk with CHKDSK, came back clean. Fired up Data Lifeguard (note the disk is WD) It failed with too many errors. So I'm sending it back, but both of the backups have been logged by ATI2014. Every time I've deleted the backups and then tried to just delete the settings in ATI2014 for the backup in question, It says everything is OK. But the next time I try to validate a new backup, It always comes back with "TIB file XX can not be found". I have to delete all of these messages until they are all gone. Then the Validation continues.

Is there a fix for this ? or something else that needs to be done ?

Thanks

To get rid of the bad tib files, in 2014, the delete needs to be done from within the program such as this link.
GH5. How to delete backup files using Acronis Backup 'Explorer'
The specific files (or chains) could be deleted by specific selection from inside this viewing.

At this point, your best bet is to stop using the problem task and create a new task with a new task name. New task name and new tib file name should differ from the old. My suggestion also is to poiint storage to a new sub-folder name. I personally assign different sub- folder targets for each different task.

I'm a bit confused. When you right click on a task, a drop down menu appears with a "DELETE" function. Selecting the DELETE, give you another drop down with 2 selections 1- delete whole backup 2 - delete settings only. Since the disk which had these tasks no-longer exists, which option should I use to get rid of the tasks in question ?

Delete settings only will delete the associated task.

Delete settings doesn't seem to fix the problem. Today was a prime example. I performed another backup but on my old backup disk. It completed fine and then I ran a validation. Before the validation would start, it prompt me it couldn't find TIB #27. At that point you can cancel, you can retry, you can ignore. If you retry, I will get the same message again. If you cancel your validation is done. If you ignore, it will be followed by Can not find TIB #26. This will continue as long as you ignore and you get down to TIB #1 and when ignoring it, the validation for real backup task begins. The reason there are 27 Tib's is because the backup tibs that nolonger exist were split @ 4.7gb each. In fact, this series happened twice during the validation since there were 2 full backups that nolonger exist that were on the bad drive.

The reason I questioned about the delete options is because I tried both in the past. The "Delete whole backup" doesn't work. It will sit for hours doing nothing and requires ATI3014 to be ended. The "Delete settings" does delete the task, but does not get rid of the problem of not finding the TIB's that don't even belong to the task the your validating.

I don't have any idea if this is SOP, but I do not remember having this problem with ATI2010 (the previous version I was using Br ATI2014).

Search for archives.xml, rename this file to archives.xml.old. reboot your system. This will cause TI to rebuild the database that holds your backup tasks info thus eliminating the problem.

OK - So you recommend that I do this after loosing actual Backup TIB's, before doing any further actions ? This could be a problem, since I assume that having ATI rebuild that file will lead to losing many old/valid backup tasks of very stagnate old data that may reside on several different backup volumes ? What happens to those tasks (and they are active) ?

The app will search for any .tib files on your system upon startup and rebuild the archives file based on the .tib files found. Any remaining tasks associated with those files will continue to function. If backup files exist that are not associated with a saved task they can be imported back into the app or recovered as desired.

Since you are not deleting the archives file if the result in renaming it does not produce the desired results you can then remove the new archives file, change back the name of the old archives file and things will be back to their current state.

Note about a prior comment: A tib file will be split by the program into 4G segments when the target has a FAT32 file system. Converting the target to NTFS will enable the future tib files to be one large file.

Just a little clarification regarding deletion of tib files and tasks. We are discussing version 2014 only.

The actions needed may be controlled by what you plan to do with the remaining tib files.

A backup task is configured and named and creates a bunch of tib backup files. We are specifically discussing the tib files created by this single task.
All tib files created by the single task must reside in the same single folder for when restoring or validating.

---------------------------------------------------
Your main menu has a listing of several backup tasks.

To remove one task from the listing, perform action as per GH20. To remove ALL TASKS, perform action of GH19. Neither GH19 nor GH20 will delete any tib backup files. The storage folder will be untouched.

GH20. Remove Single Task from Task Menu Listing

GH19. Remove ALL TASKS from Task Menu Listing

GH21. How to add backup files to the listing of backup tasks for assorted uses             such as validation or recovery or add missing files to backup tasks.

Caution: If chain contains incremental files, only the very most recent can be deleted and chain remain usable. Deleting the oldest incremental will cause the chain to cease being restorable beginning wherever the deletion occurred. Chains with incremental must remain sequential beginning with FULL.

-------------------------------------------------------
If you want to delete a single or one or two tib files from an existing task and allow the others tib files from the same task to remain, perform the action via GH5.
Inside GH5 Explorer view, upper left corner offers a list by disk mode or file mode--user choice to get all files listed.
Deletion occurs in this screen by user selecting the specific files listed along the bottom margin to be deleted. User may have to shuffle the listing of files to get all files visible. Usually, user can make more files visible by selecting a different files to move the dates listed.
Using this method will normally allow the task to continue working but an attempted validation by the user after the deletion can often make the task become up to date.

GH5. How to delete backup files using Acronis Backup 'Explorer'

Note: this action is assuming that you want the task to continue available and workable. If task is not to continue in use, the tib files can be deleted via Windows Explorer, and task can be removed from the list via GH20.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any group of tib files not listed inside tasks or has no associated task can be deleted via Windows Explorer.

A chain of tib files with full plus associated incremental's must remain as integral unit with no deletions in order for the newest inc to be restorable. Each inc contains data not included in any other file. If all inc deleted, full can remain as single and restorable.

A chain of tib files with full plus differential needs only FULL plus one diff file to be restorable. Older diff files can be candidates for deletion but my rule is never delete old backups unless you have to have the storage space with no other storage disks available.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The program also offers a DELETE option by Right clicking the task name.

The choice is to "delete settings" if used, will require the task to be reconfigured. Tib backups will remain untouched.
or, the choice also is to "delete whole backups". If choice is to delete backups, ALL BACKUPS CREATED BY THIS INDIVIDUAL TASK WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT ANY CONFIRMATION BY THE USER.
---

My recommendation is to create your backup schemes so they do their own deletion of oldest chains automatically. This practice eliminates most need for manual deletion.

Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partition, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.

Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup....Store/Keep 4 versions (chains). Use whatever number best fits the individual needs..

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Avoid task editing. Avoid causing your own grief.

Thanks for you help. Didn't know that the removing task button was there.

PS: Grover - the link in your GH20 item, links to a jpg shows a step 2 but its circled as "Recovering Files" ? Can you explain that function ?

I believe you are referring ite GH21, step 2 Recover Files.

Step 2 is a pathway to get to the next screen shown as Screen 3:
"Screen 3--The files now available for assorted uses via the Acronis Backup Explorer or TimeSlice.
