Which version of startup media should I use with build 7046

Thread needs solution

A few months ago I purchased Acronis True Image Home 2010 build 5026 boxed version at a retail store. For my purposes it has worked well. I recently downloaded and upgraded to build 7046 and after doing so, I used it to create a new bootable CD including both Full and Safe modes. I can restore my system using either the 5026 bootable CD (retail) or the 7046 CD which I burned myself and I can restore any backup whether it was made with 5026 or 7046. But, unlike the retail CD, I can only use the 7046 CD, which I created, in safe mode because it does not see my C drive which is RAID striped if I try to use the full mode. So my question is, should I use the newer 7046 CD to do system recovery in safe mode or continue to use the 5026 version in full mode keeping in mind that from now forward I will be making my backups in the windows environment under the newer 7046. Both recovery methods seem to work so does it matter which one I use?

Thanks,

Hello James,

Let me help you.

It is recommended to use the newest Acronis Bootable Media to have better hardware support. Moreover, Acronis does not guarantee that images (backup archives) created with a newer build of the product will be supported by older builds. This means that restoring an image created with Acronis True Image Build 7046 may fail with Acronis True Image Build 5026.

Also, to fix the issue with your RAID recognition, I may recommend you to try a special version of bootable media that you can download from your account.

  1. Log in to your account (if you do not have one, you will need to create it);
  2. Once logged in, click My Products & Downloads:

  3. Scroll down to the registered product and click Bootable Media:

  4. Click Download:

  5. Acronis Bootable Media will be downloaded as an ISO file. See Burning an ISO Image.

Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

I think the ideal thing is to create a new bootcd after you install an ATI update. and then test it. If you have a problem with that bootcd (it doesn't see all of your drives), then download the iso that uses the isolinux loader and burn that and see if that works.

Hello,

Scott, I absolutely agree with you. We do recommend to create a new bootable media after the release of each new build of Acronis True Image, since we'll constantly adding a new hardware support and fixing known issues.

Thank you.

Hello again,

I tried the downloadable ISO file and it booted but does not see my RAID drive C. So it appears that the only two choices I have are to use the full version of 5026 (store bought) or the 7046 CD in safe mode. Given those choices I am gathering that it would be best to use 7046 in safe mode? Both methods of restoring seem to work to restore an image of the C drive from a full backup.

Be aware that the 5026 will probably not restore a backup created via a 7046 program.

Hello,

GroverH, you are correct.

Acronis does not guarantee that images (backup archives) created with a newer build of the product will be supported by older builds.

Thank you.

Iirc, the Safe Mode uses a version of DOS as an OS. So it probably won't see USB drives. But you've done the right ting; tested it to determine if it works satisfactorily on your hardware.

The downloadable iso file that you can burn to CD to make a bootable CD uses a different linux loader than the CD you make from within ATI and it usually has more up-to-date drivers. So it's probably worth your trying it, especially if yuo have a spare drive you can install in place of your system drive to restore to tomake sure it's bootable.

I understand when you say a backup created with the new version may not be restored by an older version. However, you seem to be saying in this quote that a backup created by version 5026 may not be restored by 7046. That would mean my old backups would be useless if I upgrade to 7046. Please confirm I have read this wrong.

Hello Norman,

I'm terribly sorry for that confusing mistake.

Of course I mean: an image created with Acronis True Image Build 7046 may fail with Acronis True Image Build 5026.

Once again, please accept my profound apologies and thank you for pointing me to that mistake.

Rule of thumb is any build of a version can handle backups made with a prior version, often even the version before that. However, because of changes/additions of features, older versions, even the just prior version cannot necessarily handle anything newer. If you move to a newer version, you should replace older backups (at least those two or more versions older). If you cannot replace them -- say you have a backup that has certain data that you want to keep but that is no longer on the original disk -- then you should either keepthe old version around in case yo need to install it again, or restore the backup to a spare disk and re-backup the data using the newer version.

Of course if the data inthe older bakups are obsolete , you can jsut delete them and let newly made ones ( with new data) take their place.

Here's an update. I have successfully created a BartPE bootable CD with Acronis True Image Home 2010 build 7046. It appears to have full functionality. I tested it by restoring my C drive (RAID array) and it worked. I don't know why the rescue media built from within Acronis would not see my RAID array except in safe mode and I don't know why the downloadable ISO had the same issue, but Since the BartPE does work, that is the one I will use. Thanks everyone for the assistance.

The ATI BootCd, whether made from wwithin ATI or downloaded as an iso image uses linux and linux hardware drivers. Bart uses windows and windows drivers. the windows drivers that work are on your pc, so if ATI works on your machine, then it should work from the Bart CD.
