Recovering files from incomplete backup because of hardware problems

Thread needs solution

I use the latest version (True Image 2010, build 7046) and tried backups from a probably defective Harddisk.

For one partition I got only 20 files (80 gb of probably 230 gb total) of the partition backup.
For restore the program complains, that I have not the last volume.
However, quite probable the saved 80 gb contains a lot of usable data - how to retrieve these data ?

For another partion I tried file backup andgot 2 files (8 gb) - also there are surely some complete files stored.
The same complaint that I have not the last volume.

Best Regards
Michael

Did the backups complete with errors or did the backups not get finished (crash, lock-up, partial file, etc.)? If it couldn't finish, the backup files will be corrupt and you can pretty much forget about getting any information out of them.

In this is the case, you would probably have a much better chance of using recovery software on the drive (assuming it's still somewhat functional).

It might be helpful to know exactly what happened during the backup.

I have the same problem. How did you recovery data from the backup(s)? My backup is on two memory sticks.
error message: "This is not last volume of the backup archive"

With the current situation, there are 3 ways:
- the first one is to double click on one of the archives, and see if you can explore them. Then, you can drag and drop the file and folers you see to where you want,
- you can try to mount them if this option is available when you right click on them from within Windows Explorer,
- you can try to restore within ATI. If you cannot click this windows away and proceed with the restore anyway, try another more recent archive. Maybe you changed the destination of the backup, you moved it around, and you can find it. If it was deleted or ATI got confused, there is not much you can do to avoid the message, except recreating a new backup tasks.

To recreate a new task, here is the cleanest way:
- using windows explorer, copy the archives you want to keep for safekeeping to another directory,
- within ATI, delete your backup. This will delete all your task settings, schedule and original backup files. You can safely delete remaining images you don't want to keep after that.
- within ATI, recreate your task.

Gary Schulze,

Try copying the image files from the flash drives to a hard drive and see if you can access it from there. It's possible it's not being read properly from the flash drive.

Pat L: What does ATI stand for? Acronis True Image?
So far nothing has worked.
I did copy files from the memory sticks to hard drive.

Yes, ATI = Acronis True Image (TI is also used a lot).

What are the file sizes of the image splits? I assume there are only two, unless you split them by a value instead of by the drive.

What are the file names of the splits?

Was the backup created directly to the flash drives? Was it created using TI in Windows?

Do you get the error both from TI in Windows and TI from the TI CD?

Do you know for sure if the original back up to the flash drives completed successfully? Was it validated at that time?

There are two backup files which were successful, but the third file cancelled on a hard drive read error. The backup was not successful.
First file: MyBackup1.tib 3,817,760 KB, attributes check archive, disk size 3.64 GB
Second file: MyBackup2.tib 3,901,512 KB, disk size 3.72 GB
Third file backup was incomplete and was destoryed or is not available. The ATI backup was never any good.
The backups were directly written on the flash memory sticks. Backups were created using TI in Windows XP.
Yes error using TI in Windows XP and recovery TI CD.
Error when using memory sticks is: error message: "This is not last volume of the backup archive"
I copied the files (MyBackup1.tib, MyBackup2.tib) to my hard drive. Now the error message is: "Cannot open backup archive on the specified device. Either there is no archive on it or the archive is corrupted".
The backup was created incomplete using "True Image Home 2010".

If the two files you have are the first two splits of a single backup image and the last one is missing you won't be able to recover anything. The first and last split files are absolutely required.
