Restoring an image from a smaller drive to a larger one

Thread needs solution

Okay I may be changing the main system drive in my computer to a slightly bigger one. I have a full system backup of my C:\ drive which was made with my current drive which is 150 GB.

If I install a new drive at 160 GB and then restore the image do I understand correctly that Acronis will automatically expand the size of the old image so it fills all the space of the new drive? According to Article 2770 I should not have to do anything as the program will automatically resize the image to fill the space of the new drive.

Correct?

Which version and build of True Image? With ver 2010 build 5055, I've seen where sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. But it's an easy fix when it doesn't.

I suggest you read GroverH's guide at this link forum.acronis.com/forum/3426 item 7B of "Grover's Miscellaneous Information" refers to restoring to a larger drive

With any version of TrueImage Home, the user can practice or simulate their plans or restoring or cloning. It is practice up to the screen where you must choose either to Proceed or Cancel. This is the summary screen and it shows what actions the user has chosen to be performed. Examine this screen carefully and it will show the size information about what is to transpire. It will display the intended partition sizes.

Click Cancel to start over or click Proceed if you want the intended actions to actually occur.

If you have not done so, you need to know how your system disk is constructed. Does it have any hidden or diagnostic or recovery partitions. These may or may not have drive letters. You can determine this information by
Right Clicking on the MyComputer Icon and choose the Manage option.
Then choose the disk management option
Then look at the graphical (not text view) view of your disk. It will show the arrangement of partitions on your disk. If you have more than one partition, you will want to make sure your backup includes that partition so it can be restored. The link below shows how to include all your partitions in your backup. This if often referred to aas a "disk option" backup because everything is included.

As DwnNDrty stated, how much user interaction is needed depends a lot upon the version of TrueImage you are using but the practice runs can help a lot.

Some background reading might help. Check items 7A-7B-7C but 7B will probably help the most.

It is best that this restore procedure be done when booted from the TI Rescue CD and also best that the larger blank disk be place in its intended boot position before restoring. Remove the old disk and put the new one in its place before beginning the restore procedure.

Upon completion of restore, shut down and disconnect all drives but the new larger drive before performing first boot following the restore.

This will get you started your trial runs may bring other questions and the reference data will answer many of those questions.

I use version 11. According to the article Acronis posted the procedure is totally automatic.
