Can't locate drivers Universal Restore says it needs

Thread needs solution

I have restored a backup of a 32-bit Windows XP Professional machine onto a Dell Inspiron 3646 using Acronis Backup 11.5. Next, I ran Universal Restore and it says it is missing five drivers for Windows XP Professional:

- PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0F23&SUBSYS_068D1028&REV_0E
- PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0F35&SUBSYS_068D1028&REV_0E
- *80860F28
- *LPE0F28
- *DMA0F28

The Inspiron did not come with any driver disks. I found some chipset drivers on driverscape.com and saved them onto the Universal Restore USB stick, with no change in results.

If I try to boot from harddisk, the screen says "Starting Acronis Loader..." and just hangs there.

Where can I go from here? Any pointers on where to find these drivers, or advice on other things to try?

Hello Ginny,

According to the PCI device database, the first device (vendor 8086 and device 0F23) corresponds to the "Atom Processor E3800 Series SATA AHCI Controller".

Looking at Intel's web page for this processor, I see that Windows XP is not listed in the supported OS types. Dell also dropped support for Windows XP so you can't really download the driver specific to your machine from their site.

Do you know if this Dell 3646 is compatible with Windows XP? Have you been able to install Windows XP on these machines, for example? If yes, it makes sense to search for a combination of drivers that would work. However, if the system is not compatible in the first place, there is nothing our product can do to fix this compatibility.

Thank you for the reply. That is a clear explanation that helps me understand what is needed and that what I wanted to do will not work. I appreciate that. The following paragraphs are not for you, but for Acronis in general.

When we first decided to create a backup computer for our furnace control system, we knew the age of Windows XP might be a problem. I read through all the literature on the Acronis website and everything is "transfer to dissimilar hardware with just a few simple clicks". Before purchasing the Acronis software, I opened a ticket to the sales team to ask what special steps we would need to take considering the age of XP, and I was told there would be no problem, the Acronis software would restore XP even on dissimilar hardware.

No where in the literature or through my pre-purchase contact with tech support was it ever stated that the new system must have available XP drivers. It is extremely frustrating to have tried to do due diligence by talking to support with more technical knowledge than I have, get this far in the process, with the purchase of a system specifically for this purpose, only to NOW find out there is no way for it work!

Again, thank you for the quick and helpful support through these forums.

Hello Ginny,

I just wanted to say that I've tasked our documentation team to create a warning/disclaimer about this scenario in our KB and manuals.

I want to thank you for bringing this to our attention and I'm sorry for the situation.

Hello,
The manual clearly says that you must prepare the appropriate drivers in advance:
*Prepare drivers*
Before applying Universal Restore to a Windows operating system, make sure that you have the drivers for the new HDD controller and the chipset. These drivers are critical to start the operating system. Use the CD or DVD supplied by the hardware vendor or download the drivers from the vendor’s website.
http://www.acronis.com/en-eu/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.5/i…

I do understand that not everybody reads the documentation, but this is not the reason to say "was it ever stated that the new system must have available XP drivers". Acronis does not create or prepare drivers for you, neither Acronis is responsible for third party device/driver compatibility.

Igor, thank you very much for this followup. I really appreciate your quick and helpful responses, and hopefully this will help someone else just wading into the world of backing up old systems as I am.
