TI 2010 Build 7046 Recovery Disk fails on Dell Studio 14 with Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate

Thread needs solution

I have a recovery disk made with TI 2010 build 7046 and one that was made with a previous build of TI 2010. When I try to boot my Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit from the recovery media, the initial choice menu comes up just fine. I choose True Image Home Full Version and hit enter. It then shows an Acronis logo in the upper left hand corner and has some white print on a black background which says "loading please wait" which is followed by
"/bin/ipwatchd: error while loading shared libraries libpcap so.0.9.4 : cannot open shared object file No such file or directory. No raid disks." And then something about "reading all physical disks...", I think. It goes by very fast.

This may all be normal, I am just trying to document the whole startup.

It then goes to the normal Acronis splash screen that has the small progress bar in it. That bar get a little over halfway and the screen goes black and the machine reboots.

That's it. Over and over. In both builds.

This is a brand new Dell Studio 14. I have booted it and applied all the updates. I have done nothing else to it in the three hours since I received it. I wanted to make an image of it so I could always get back to where it was when I received it, but my Acronis fails as described. What can I do to make this work?

You could try the downloaded ISO image from your account and see if that version does any better - it may have newer hardware drivers. The initial messages you see are normal and not a problem. The rebooting is not. Sometimes things like wireless mouse and KB cause problems. If you have the Plus Pack, a WinPE build could be made. If no Plus Pack, a BartPE build could be made. Both of these use Windows drivers that may well work better than Linux versions.

Thank you Gary. I just downloaded the 2010 native bootable media Build: #7046 and tried it. It rebooted at exactly the same spot. As a side note, I was able to use Clonezilla to image this machine, but I would prefer to use TI if possible. On the other hand, I would like to start using the machine and if I can't get an image soon I will have to give up and move on. I do own the Plus Pack, I will look into building WinPE if I have the time today.

Hello,

Gary thanks for your help.

otter, please use Gary's suggestions as a possible solutions for the issue. Most likely the problem caused by some hardware compatibility issues, i.e. standard bootable CD doesn't have necessary drivers for your hardware or CD detects them incorrectly.

In this KB article you can find instructions on how to create a BartPE disc with Acronis plug-in. And here's the article with the information about downloadable bootable media.

Please reply to this thread if you have any other questions.

Thank you.

It looks like should use the Windows 7 install disk to build the BartPE disk, but so far the BartPE builder does not know which directory the files it wants are in on the Win 7 disk. Am I correct that I should use the Win 7 disk to build the BartPE disk and which directory on the disk should I point BartPE to? BartPE seems to be looking for D:\I386\ntdll.dll. I search the Win 7 disk and find no such file.

According to other forums it appears that BartPE cannot be built for/with Windows 7 64 bit. Can anyone here tell me otherwise or guide me to another solution?

Hello otter,

Let me shed some light on your concern.

As I can see from your account, you have Acronis Plus Pack registered, so you can make a WinPE disc that should work fine with Windows 7.

Please follow the directions from this KB article or you can have a look at tutorials on this forum created by Ashley and Gary Darsey:

HOW TO BUILD A WinPE 3.0 Bootable Media

Tutorial for creation of WinPE bootable media using Acronis WinPE ISO Builder from Plus Pack

Hope this guides will help you, however, please reply to this thread if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.

You need a copy Windows XP with at least SP1 for your source. You can run the BartPE builder on a Windows 7 system as long a you have a windows XP source. Since you have the Plus Pack use it build a WINPE version of TI. See Gary's tutorial http://forum.acronis.com/forum/9449.

I now have tested this with a second Dell Studio 14 with Windows 7 Ultimate. It does the exact same thing. I studied how to make a WinPE bootable media, but I have not the time to do all of that in the near future. I wish someone at Acronis would obtain a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate on it and figure out how to make future builds of TI 2010 work with this combo. I have been a faithful Acronis customer because the product just worked without having to do anything special. If that changes then the True Image line will not be so desirable a product as it once was.

You're missing the point. The fact that the Dell Studio 14 has Windows 7 installed is irrelevant. Windows 7 has nothing to do with the problem; it isn't even running when using the Acronis recovery environment. The problem is that the Acronis recovery environment is missing the correct hardware drivers for the Dell Studio 14. This is a perennial issue with Linux-based recovery environments since Linux driver support lags far behind Windows driver support.

The recommendation by others to use a Windows PE solution is right on target. Don't even bother with BartPE; it uses Windows XP drivers, which are dated. The driver store in WinPE is superb and will very likely support your hardware. It would be well worth your time to try creating a build.
