Hard drive locked

Thread needs solution

Hi, I am using True Image 11 Home. I cloned my WD 500gb hard drive with another of the same size and make. It finished and cloned just fine. When it was done I put the cloned one in place of my original and the computer just keeps cycling through start up. I tried putting the original one back in and I get the same results as the cloned one now. My operating system was originally windows XP pro, then I upgraded to windows 7. I then upgraded to widows 8.1 pro and I had a reserved upgrade to windows 10 ready to be installed and that's why I was cloning my hard drive as a backup just in case. I have cloned my hard drive numerous times in the past with no problems. The only difference I can think of is when I did the cloning before I hadn't installed the windows 8.1 yet. I tried using the widows 8 disk to try and repair my operating system and now it gives me a message that it cannot repair, as my hard drive is locked. I can't figure out how to unlock my hard drive so the disk can repair it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello Jane,
The problem may very well be that you tried to clone with a version of the software that is not compatible or certified to work with windows 8.1.

v11 only supported 2000, XP and Vista.

Using the windows 8 boot CD, open a command prompt any try the following commands.

Bootrec /fixMBR

bootrec /fixBoot

bootrec /rebuildBCD

Since this hardware ran XP, and windows 7, I am assuming it older and is not windows 8 Secure Boot compatible, and you are running a NTFS formatted disk with a MBR partition structure. You won't hurt anything further by running these commands. After this is done, see if the system will boot. If not, attempt a start up repair again. Longer term.. you need to use a newer version of Acronis that is compatible with the OS you are running.

Thanks Shadowsports,
I tried what you suggested already with no success. My hard drive is a 500gb with 4 partitions on it. I have done a clean install of windows 8 on one of the other partitions. I can look at the other one where my files are and have copied them to the new partition. I would still like to be able to boot to the old one as a lot of my older programs ran very well on it. Not sure they will be compatible with the new system and just the hassle of reloading them takes a lot off time. Is there a way I can go into the old system and change anything that would allow it to boot again? It would probably be better to start a new thread with that question. Again Thanks, Buzz

was there ever a resolution to this?  i am having the same issue, with 2014 version.     After i clicked OK to perform the clone, it said to restart.   upon restart, my HD is locked and won't boot (Boot Device Not Detected).   and my new clone device is still empty.

Ken, I would recommend opening a new post of your own to get help with your clone issue with ATIH 2014, then you should provide more details of what you have tried to do, how you tried to do it, what drives are involved, what system you have, version of Windows etc.

From what little you have told us, it doesn't sound as if the clone has worked if the target drive is still empty.

Take a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlXkYKzY6vs which shows a demo of how to perform a clone using ATIH 2016 but which is very similar to the process you should be using with 2014.
