TI Backup Location Issue

Thread needs solution

I'm using Acronis-True Image 2010 Home B7046 on my Win7 Ultimate x64 desktop and started to setup a backup. I want to create a schedule for two different types of backup both of which are for my C drive. The target for the backups will be a 1TB NAS drive that is only for TI backups for this system (e.g. my S2 system).

1) The first backup I want is a weekly full backup (image of my drive) where I will keep five images. Following are my steps and issue
a) I clicked on Backup in the toolbar and selected disk and partition backup
b) In the Backup Wizard window I selected Disk 1 (this is my C drive) which contains two partitions (the NTFS data section (this is where the programs and some data will be stored) and the NTFS System Reserve (I think this is Win7 stuff)). The actual drive is a 500GB drive but currently it only has 145GB of stuff. I clicked Next.

Issue 1 - In the Backup Wizard window only four of my 11 disk are showing. In that I only want to backup the "C" drive this is not an issue for me but I expected TI to see all of the drives on my system.

c) For the "Target backup archive" I selected "Create a new backup archive", for the backup location TI is default to C:\Users\jgt\Documents\MyBackups\System__@date@.tib which I DO NOT want thus I clicked on the Browse button to select a different location. I select a location on my NAS unit (Y:\BU\Acronis\S2\System__@date@.tib) and click OK. I'm then informed that I've selected a remote resource and have not specified credentials for it. Do I want to continue? I'm also informed "in order to specify a user name\password for this resource select it and click the Authentication settings button on the toolbar" I clicked the Yes button.

Issue 2 - After clicking Yes I no longer have access to the Location window to set the authentication. If I drill back to the location and click on the Authentication menu item, enter my ID\password then click on the button to test the id\password it fails. In that I've previously used TI to backup to this drive I just ignored this error.

d) Back at the "Target backup archive" window I clicked on next.

Issue 3 - Now I'm informed that I've selected to save my backup to the partition that is being backed up. This is NOT true. I ignored the error, clicked on Yes.

e) I now see the summary window - it looks OK (I'm backing up two partitions on disk one. I clicked on next and then selected weekly. I set the time to 0400, run every week, on Thursday, Start date tomorrow (I want it to make the first run in the AM, e.g. Sunday and then run every Thursday after that). I supplied my ID and PW (here I noticed that the id is S2\jgt (my system id + my user id. Possibly this is why the above authentication test failed. Nothing told me what to enter for the id.) I clicked Next.

f) For Backup method I selected Full and removed the check mark to overwrite the previous backup. At this point I expected to set the number of full backups I wanted to keep. I clicked Next.

g) In the exclude window I left the defaults (hopefully I can modify this later) and clicked Next.

h) In the backup options window I did NOT select any options (hopefully I can modify this later) and clicked Next.

i) In the "Automatically consolidate backups when" window I checked "Number of backups exceeds" and set the value to 4. I read through the help and I'm not sure if TI is going to do what I want. e.g. I want to keep five backups, when number 6 is created the oldest should be automatically deleted. I clicked Next.

Issue 3 - I'm not sure just what the help is telling me.

j) In the "Archive Comments" window I changed the task name to "Weekly Full BU of S2 Drive C" and added a comment. I then clicked Proceed. At this point I was presented with the "Tasks management" window.

Issue 4 - I currently have two scheduled task. When I clicked on either task I expected to see the calendar change to reflect the schedule for that task. The calendar did NOT change as I selected a different task (the schedules for the two task are different).

John,

I'm about to go out, so can only give a quick brief answer. You seem to have two issue #3's :)

Issue 5

The calendar will only change status 24 hours after the last scheduled task is run - in other words when the date changes!

Issue 4 or 3b

This is what should happen. Make sure you haven't ticked delete archive. Don't forget you will need the same amount of disk space free as the complete archive takes for consolidation to work.

Issue 3

Can offer no explanation.

Issue 2 and 1

Not sure, but is the NAS using a mapped drive letter? TI is more stable with UNC naming than mapping.

Colin - I'm very tired today and did not count correctly :)

OK I think I see what the calendar is telling me and IMHO it is almost worthless. It is showing me the results of ALL scheduled task and all in the same view. I was expecting to select the first task and the calendar would change to reflect the schedule for "that one task" and then I could select another task and see the schedule for the task I just selected.

Colin - ref Not sure, but is the NAS using a mapped drive letter? TI is more stable with UNC naming than mapping.

When I drill down to select the location in TI, it is TI that is using the drive letter, is this not UNC? If TI is better to use something else why does it use the path address (is path address the correct thing for me to say?).

I think I understand what you are trying to tell me. I also use SyncBackPro and when I use it to select a location on the NAS unit SBP will change the address to something like \\MAXTOR-LAN-DISK\jgt\BU\SB\AgentApplication\

To make sure I did it correctly I let SBP create the address for me then I corrected TI - it now reads \\MAXTOR-LAN-DISK\jgt\BU\Acronis\S2\S2__WeeklyBU_@date@.tib
