Configuring Backups

Thread needs solution

I'm using TI 2013. I want all the backups to deleted after one full and 6 incremental backups. How should I configure it? Should I use 'automatic clean-up?

Thanks

You don't indicate what you want to happen after the backups are deleted??

Here is one option:

Create a new backup task using the GH12 as an example of how to configure your backup scheme.
Set it for your 1 full plus 6 incremental.

Set the option "store no more than n' recent version chain to a setting of 1" or "store 1"
Configure any other task options and save the configuration.
The name assigned to the tib backup file will be whatever name you assign as the task name.

What will happen is this: Your chain length is these 7 files.
The first seven backups will be your 1 full plus 6 incrementals.
The next backup to be created will be backup #8 which will the a new full backup.
Literally SECONDS after the successful completion of the FULL B2 (backup #8),
the automatic deletion of 7 files in B1 will occur.
What remains will be just the Full B2.

The next 6 backups will be the 6 Incrmentals, followed next by the creation of Full B3
Literally SECONDS after the successful completion of the FULL B3 (backup #15)
the automatic deletion of 7 files in B2 will occur.
What remains will be just the Full B3 and the cycle repeats.

Aconis offers no choice to delete the old before creating the new full replacement.

So the above basically is keeping 1 chain of ongoing backups.
If you wish to keep more backups chains, then change the keep 1 to keep 2 or more
and the number of backups kept will be adjusted.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partiton, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.

Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Thanks. When it asks to set as 'default' does that mean the settings (including the bakup scheme and schedule will remain the same?

Not really. The settings you configure to the task are good for that one task.
if during the creation of that task, after you have finalized your settings,
you can click the "save as default" and SOME of your personalized settings will appear pre-configured on the next task that you create.
The progam really does not identify which settings are saved.
Using the "save as default" will save the backup scheme and the email notification and some of the backup options.

This may be of interest.

Thanks for the clarity! I doubt the average user could make sense of the Acronis cryptic help menu

I've been having trouble configuring the backups so that after 6 incrementals a new Full Backup is created but it does not delete the old .tib files. I have set the backup scheme to store no more than 1 version chain, but TI keeps adding incrementals instead of deleting the old files and leaving one full backup. Am I missing something?

Notice my example GH12 ABOVE. Backup scheme name absolutely must read "custom".
Planned deletion should occur after the 2nd Full has been completed and deletion should occur after each new full in the future.

If this is your setting and things ae not acting correctly, then start over with a new task with a new name but with no edits/changes after its creation.

This may help.

Thanks for the help. There was no problem with this until a few days ago. So I uninstalled TI 2013 and the Plus Pack. Then I reinstalled them both. I just ran a 7 day chain starting with a full backup. TI did not delete the previous files. It just created another full backup. I deleted the chain and the partition. I then set up a new name and a new folder for the backups. I am running that now to see how it goes. The name of the recent file is Partake. Here is the image of the tib storage file. It is running as I write so it is not complete It will eventually be about 180,000,000 KB. I'm hoping by changing the location and the name, the problem will be solved. I just manually run the backups until it reaches 7 to check. I assume my configurations for the backup scheme are correct?

Thanks again,

Marc

If you have your backup scheme set for
FULL PLUS 6 INCREMENTAL
STORE NO MORE THAN 1 RECENT VERSION CHAIN.

You must complete all 7 backups of chain 1 PLUS complete FULL B1 or backup #8.
After backup #8 is completed, all 7 files of chain 1 will be deleted.

I believe that is what I've been doing. But I'll know tomorrow if the new name and location works!

Thanks

Well, Finally it deleted the previous backups as it was commanded to do! I suppose there is something about not using the same name or location for a new chain? Very strange! Any ideas why?

The above link is an example of cleanup working which I was referring to in

"If you have your backup scheme set for

STORE NO MORE THAN 1 RECENT VERSION CHAIN.

You must complete all 7 backups of chain 1 PLUS complete FULL B1 or backup #8.
