Backup - cycling and generations
Hi All
I am trying to configure ATIES to run a new full backup the first of every month and daily incrementals inbetween.
I want to configure this via the interface because I want a simple solution, (i.e. no "clever" batch files or vb apps please).
I figure its not too much work to setup a full backup as a "one time only" task for each month of the year. So I would have 12 full backups scheduled to start on 1st of each month.
But its doing the daily incrementals thats a problem. I could also do a "one time only" for each working day of the year but thats a lot of work.
Pity the daily incremental doesn't have a start and end date. It only has a start date!
Any advice appreciated.

Taner,

My suggestion does not meet your criteria of working within the interface, but my suggestion will fix your problem. Use Chain2Gen(C2G) which is a helper program for TrueImageHome(TIH). TIH does the scheduling and the backups while C2G makes sure the correct number of backups are retained and that the full backups are created on the date specified.

Oleg and GroverH
Thank you for your valuable feedback.
My first impression is that Oleg's option is the best, IMO, because it does not require you to understand and edit batch files and is overall a more simple solution, and therefore more easy to maintain. All can be configured and maintained from the interface quite easily.
Also IMO, the solution provided by GroverH seems to have more features for defining generational backups, but is overall more difficult and complex to implement and maintain, and requires you to understand and edit batch file paramaters in the main batch file as well as having to understand the many options and how they work.
So for simplicity and ease of maintenance I personally prefer Oleg's option. It does meet the basic requirement of being maintained from the standard interface and is simple to configure and understand.
However, I found the best solution is for me is to upgrade to Backup and Recovery 10, which has the grandfather, father and son generational (GFS) backup plan built as standard features in the interface.
So if you can upgrade then I would recommend Backup and Recovery 10 as the best path, because everything you need is built in. If you cannot upgrade or don't want to, then my preference would be for Oleg's more easy to use offering.
Let me qualify this by saying it is my opinion only, and that I have not fully tested all 3 options.
