TI Home crash and reboot when Recovery browsing

Thread needs solution

Using TI Home 2010 build #7046 on laptop with Linux EXT4 partitions.

I boot my laptop on a CD with the TI boot image, but when I select recovery and open the browser window to select the backup image to recover, TI continues to re-update the windows (the icons flicker) showing the drives (partitions) for some seconds and then crash and reboot the laptop.

What can I do to recover from my backup?

Hello Bent,

Let me assist you and resolve the issue.

The most probable reason of the issue is that Acronis bootable media doesn't have necessary drivers for your hardware or it detects the devices incorrectly.

In such cases I recommend you to download a special updated version of the bootable media from your account, burn it to a CD and check if the issue still persists. That new media is based on the latest Linux kernel and includes a different set of hardware drivers, so it should work fine for you.

  1. Log in to your account;
  2. Once logged in, click My Products & Downloads:

  3. Scroll down to the registered product and click Bootable Media:

  4. Click Download:

  5. Acronis Bootable Media will be downloaded as an ISO file. See Burning an ISO Image.

Please let me know if the issue still occurs or you need any additional assistance.

Thank you.

I'm using the latest boot image downloaded from MyAccount: Acronis True Image Home 2010 build #7046, as I write. And by the way the previous builds of 2010 have the same problem.

And maybe it's a problem with Linux EXT4 partitions. An older install of Linux with EXT3 on the same laptop didn't have this problem.

Hello Bent,

Thank you for the update.

Most likely EXT4 partition is the reason of the issue since currently Acronis products do not support the ext4 file system. It will be realized in the next version of Acronis True Image Home.

Thank you.

Hi Bent,

This issue may be stale for you but I have the same problem, I basically backed up my windows without issue, then blew away that partition and installed Linux Mint 9. Now when I go to restore my windows I have the same issue as you, when I browse for backups using the bootable recovery CD it freaks out and reboots. I updated to the latest version of Acronis True Image Home which at this time is build 7046 and the same issue happens.

I found an odd work around though, I chose build a system report from the drop down next to the help blue orb with the question mark. Then I hit the save button and it does a few jumps as it appears to be working it's way through the disk tree but then stabilizes, it doesn't cause a reboot. I then canceled and went back to browsing for a restore and it worked!

This workaround worked for me as well. I can confirm that the issue is still occurring on the latest build of True Image Home 2010. I am glad you posted the workaround Greg, I was worried I wasn't going to be able to restore my laptop backup. Hopefully Acronis can fix this issue in a future release.

EDIT: I have more information on this. When I restored my backup, TI tried to restore my entire Windows disk to one partition that had been created by Linux. I was unable to get Windows to boot after the restore completed. I decided then to delete all partitions on the disk before running TI. When I did this, the reboot when browsing error did not occur. I think it does in fact have something to do with the ext4 file system, and it appears the way to get around it (without the "Generate System Report" workaround) is to remove any ext4 partitions before attempting the restore.
