Backup Schedule from ATI 2014

Thread needs solution

Hi.  Longtime ATI user here.  I have ATI 2014 and am considering upgrading to ATI 2016.  Is it safe to do an in place upgrade of the software or is it better to delete ATI 2014 and then install ATI 2016?  And if I do an in place upgrade will my existing backup schedule be retained and continue to work without a hitch or will I need to rebuild my backup schedule from scratch.  Thanks!

The answer depends upon who you want to believe.

Acronis says that you can upgrade in place and save your settings.

Most every volunteer on the forum will tell you otherwise.

My suggestion would be

1. Do a fresh disk image backup so you have a fall back if something goes wrong.

2. Refer item 4 in my signature lnks and download the 2015 Cleanup utility.

3. run the cleanup utility which will uninstall and clean 2014.

4. Re-install 2016 as a fresh install from your downloaded file from your account.

However, you may also want to make some screen captures of your current backup tasks settings to you can replicate them as new, as all new tasks will be needed if you do a fresh install.  In the long run, I believe you will have less issues if you observe my suggestions.

2016 is very different and fewr features as compared to 2014.  You may want to consider installing the trial version for 30 days before making up your mind to purchase. Many users were so disappointed in 2016 that they returned to 2014, but 2014 does not support Windows 10  but 2016 does.

If  you purchase, once you register your 64 character serial number into  your account, the 2016 install file will become available for download from within your Aconis personal account.  Free support is for first 30 days following purchase.  After 30 days and you need help, your choices is pay-per-incident or ask for help via the forum such as you have done in this posting you made.

Thank you for the very detailed information Grover!  If I do move forward with the purchase I will do a fresh install and simply recreate the backup schedules.  I only have two data backup schedules to configure - a monthly full backup and a daily differential.   The extra work to set that up again is trivial.  Just to confirm - it sounds like you are saying to run the 2015 cleanup utility even though I have ATI 2014 installed?

Yes, the 2015 is a multiple version removal tool.

Some suggested backup schemes with automatic cleanup so as to avoid manual tib file deletion which causes issues.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup.
...Store/Keep 4 versions (chains). Use whatever number best fits the individual needs..

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup.
...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.
