Backup to Removable USB Drives
11.5:
I have a primary USB Backup Drive that stays connected to my system... We'll call this USB_A. It is mapped to drive "F:".
I have a set of two USB Drives that, when connected, Map to the same drive letter "E:". I'll call these USB_B & USB_C. They get swapped out weekly.
I have the following vaults set up in Acronis:
Vaults:
Personal:
MainArchive (Vault Path F:\)
OffSite (Vault Path E:\)
One Job only:.. Job_A
Where to Backup:
Location: MainArchive (Personal Vault)
2nd Location: Offsite (Personal Vault)
The job seems to hang while clearing old backups and cleanup the archives. I regularly have to cancel that portion of the backup to allow it to finish. I suspect it might something to do with the configuration. Is this the recommended configuration, or is there another?
p.s. I have tried using the cloud backup, but it was so slow that the client couldn't tolerate it.
Please let me know if there are any options that would make this idea work well for the client.

The jist of that article basically says that when you swap media that you need to use simplified naming so that the metadata will match what is on the media. Doesn't that apply only to differential and incremental backups?
If you are doing full backups you don't really need to use simplified naming do you? because the backups aren't dependant on any previous backups..... no?

Hello Jim,
The issue in that case is not related to dependent backups, but to the metadata consistency. If you does not select "Removable media" mode in the backup plan settings and start changing target disks, the program will fail to find the metadata file (a file with .xml extension created along with archives, which provides the program with information on the vault contents), because it was left on the first location. "Removable media" mode or Simplified naming of backup files prevents such issues, because the meta-file is not created in this scheme.
Thank you,

I am sitting here trying to figure out why you have to use simple naming or removable mode when using swappable USB hard drives. The XML files are where they need to be. Catalogs are correct and get updated before the drive is swapped. For all practical purposes, as far as Acronis is concerned, the drive is fixed.
Why do you need to either use simple naming or removable mode?

I have re-done my backup job with the simple naming, created a Robocopy script to copy it to the removable hard drive, and so far the backup isn't failing :)
The next trick is to see if I can recover from the removable drive.
Thanks,
