TIH 11.0 Build 8,101

Thread needs solution

I THOUGHT that I had a product that put Norton Ghost to shame buuuuut every time I use TIH anymore, I have problems. I am using Differential Backup on my desktop updating at 1 AM. Yesterday at 11 am, it showed it was 33% done. It was slowing everything down so badly that I stopped it. This morning at 9 am, it showed it was 0% done after running for 8 hours! My differential backups previously were about 8 megs each in size. I had created a new full backup about a month ago and it was creating the differentials OK until this week when it was taking forever. I still have about 160 megs free on my external USB backup drive, but I went and deleted about half of the oldest differentials to create more room. It still just sits there and does nothing. Today the status screen shows after 8 hours it is about half way through 'checking'. It hasn't even started backing up.
Tomorrow morning I am going to create a new full backup and start over ONE MORE TIME. After that I'm going back to Norton Ghost and Acronis can kiss my you know what! I have no faith that this program even has saved enough info to really restore my drive if it has this much trouble even doing its normal, day to day tasks.
I CERTAINLY am not going to purchase a newer version of a program that doesn't work now and is not properly supported by its company!

Hi Thomas, sorry you are having problems with TI11 - I never did.

I can't remember now but with TI11 I'm sure you can specify how many diffs are done before a new full is performed. You say 'ONE MORE TIME' - how many times has this gone wrong? What if anything have you altered to see if it works better (such as doing full backups weekly which would be much safer).

Also you say your diff backups are about 8MB each - !!! that sounds very odd indeed because each differential should be bigger than the last! Can you explain?

Incremental backups might be smaller but not differentials.

PS - True Image 2010 comes highly recommended by me at least

Hey, thanks for the reply. First off, I used the 8 meg as an average size on the diff. backups. They ranged from 6 to 9. I have the schedule set for 6 backups but it got up to 14 before it started to stall out and just sit there. ONE MORE TIME?? Tonight will be the fourth time I've done this. The previous three times the same thing happened.
I may have to do full back ups weekly but I really shouldn't have to. A good full backup followed by daily differential backups should be just fine. This is a home computer and a lot doesn't get changed day to day except we do our banking on it hence the daily versus weekly backup.

Ok Thomas, you are welcome. I probably never had this problem because I never tried what you are trying with TI11. I haven't searched around for any help but I think others have found that this sort of thing is a problem with TI11 in some circumstances. I have tested this though with TI2010 (the Backup & Security 2010 which has the same True Image component) and currently use the same strategy for two of my partitions and it works just fine.

I think I will point you in the direction of Grovers thread which is always worth looking through but this one in particular regarding chain2gen

What is the size of the full backup and how much space is there to where you back it up to?

Hello,

bin, thanks for your help.

Thomas, we're really sorry for the difficulties you've experienced. I may recommend you to do the following in order to fix the issue:

1. Please check the partition for errors:

Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd);
Enter the command:
chkdsk DISK: /r

where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

2. Update Acronis SnapAPI driver:

Download SnapAPI update
Unpack the archive and run the SnapAPISetup.msi file;

Go through the wizard screens and hit Proceed to install the update.
(!) You will need to reboot the machine to finish the installation.

Please reply to this thread if the issue still persists.

    Thank you.

Ilya,
I have read that same reply from you many times in other threads and I have already done those steps with no change in performance.
This morning it started a full backup at 1 am and now at 8:30 it is 35% done. The last two times it also got to 35% and then just sat there.

I have 151 gigs free on my USB backup drive. The previous 2 full backups were 33 and 41 gigs. I erased the older full ones. The last differential backup was #24 and it is 7.7 gigs.

Maybe, as a long shot, I should try a different USB port as it may not be performing correctly or at the 2.0 speed. Another option may be to try a newer backup drive. I am just frustrated as everyone else is that the program was a God-send when I found it but now it seems to be a Devil!

I too have had problems with backups to external USB drives. One of them is a FreeAgent Pro which afaict has some interface problems at least according to Google-searches I've done on it.

You should at least start by checking two things: 1. Connect your USB drive to an on-mobo USB port, not an extension port e.g. at the front of your computer case, and 2. Use the best USB cable you can find.

I am convinced that some of my problems have been related to both of these things, and I actually bought new cables and use them exclusively in the back (motherboard) ports of my PCs, to eliminate concerns with those tiny wires from the front of my case, which feed-back across spinning fans and hard drives which are noise-makers to say the least...

Thanks, Tom. I just unplugged the drive from the front port and plugged it into a port on the motherboard's external plugs. We will see how it backs up tonight. I also just ordered a new 1TB external drive to replace this serial one from Amazon for $75.

Well, this morning Acronis shows that a full backup was created last night and the task is complete. It looks as if moving the USB cable to the motherboard's port helped the problem; HOWEVER I plugged my wireless mouse's transmitter into the same front port where the external drive HAD been plugged and the transmitter flashes, which is an indication that the port is faulty! I put the transmitter into the other front port and it's fine. Looks like a bad port caused the problem but I am leaving the backup plugged into the motherboard port!

Although it says a backup was created, on the home page of Acronis I get the yellow banner saying 'System State:Warning'......... Result: Have no backup." What is going on? I have at least 3 full backups including the one from last night. This error message is just one more irritating, unsettling thing about this program. Why do I get that message?

I have another question about archives but I'll start a new thread on that one.

Hello Thomas,

The "Protection State" status isn't always accurate, especially if your backups reside on an external drive. You can safely ignore it if you know you've done a complete image backup of the drive and created image validates successfully.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Ilya,
Thank you for acknowledging that there is a problem with the 'Protection State'. May I ask, since probably over 90% of the people who back up their drives use external drives, why was this problem not fixed in my version of the software rather than try to sell me a new version? Why not support all those who trusted in Acronis and give them a patch to fix the problem? Don't expect them to buy a new version in the hopes that it will be more functional than the last one they BOUGHT.

Hello Thomas!

Thank you for your comment and your question. I will be glad to shed some light to the situation.

Unfortunately Acronis True Image Home 11 is an outdated product, so it's not developed, updated and supported anymore. Rhus no patch will be available for this version.

We may advise to upgrade to the next version in case we know that this issue was fixed there.

Should the issue be not critical and not affecting backup creation and successful restoration we can suggest all known solutions to fix it, and should the problem persist - advise you to upgrade.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Dear Yana,
You tell me that TIH 11.0 is an old, outdated program and you no longer support it. If you check your records, I only bought the program in March of last year so it is just over one year old. No support???
Of course, the program has problems and I cannot rely on a good backup or restoration because I have two pages full of complete, incremental (from first usage) and differential backups. I just want to delete all the ones that are no longer valid but it cannot be done from within TIH. So I will be glad to accept your offer of a free license for the newest version, which, hopefully, allows me to do that.

Sincerely

Tom Witman
