ssd to ssd
hi all, hope someone can help, firstly, not sure of which version of acronis to go under as download page does not say which version i am getting. just bought kingston hyperx predator 240G pcie ssd, activation key for acronis supplied with hardware.
i dont have 2 slots of type needed to plug both ssd's in at the same time, so i assume i need to create an iso file (send to another sata drive), then make a boot disk to oversee the process of reinstalling from iso file back onto new ssd when i change the ssd'd around, cant see any instructions for doing this anywhere, only disk to disk where both are plugged in, can anyone help with where i get these instructions?
many thanks
peter

Hello Peter,
Like FtrPilot suggest your system specs would help alot here. I can say that because you are working with a pcie M.2 based ssd you will need to create a WinPE recovery media disk to work with the drive. Also, you do not need two pcie X4 slots if you have 2 of these drives as it sounds by your post. A free X8 or X16 slot will work as well.

hi, system specs as requested Running Win 7 on Desktop PC, Z87-C Mobo, i5CPU, 8G RAM, 1000W PSupply, 1x240G Kingston sata3 SSD, 1x OCZ Agility 120G Sata 3 SSD,1 x Toshiba Sata 3 SSD, 2 x 2TB Seagate HDD’s, 1 x GPU GeForce 770, 1 x DVD RW, 1 x Revodrive 3 PciE 120G (to be replaced by new 240G SSD Predator.
the new Predator drive that will replace the Revodrive doesnt match up physically with any other pci slots on the mobo, except for the slot that the revodrive is in now, hence my problem. Mobo only has 1 x16 (x4 mode) slot (in use by revodrive), and no x8

slots as per spec manual
1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode) *2
2 x PCIe 2.0 x1
3 x PCI
hope you can help with a solution, many thanks, peter

Here's how I would proceed:
Activate Acronis software.
Perform a full backup of the Revodrive using "Disk Mode". Send to one of the 2TB HDDs. This is straightforward, even if you have never used Acronis.
If the Revodrive is your boot disk, then you will need to will need to create a WinPE recovery media disk to work with the drive, as Enchantech described. If you can boot from one of the other drives, that may be an easier solution.
Input the Predator drive. Boot...then restore the image to the Predator drive. Once again, the Acronis software is straightforward.
If you need to create a WinPE recovery media disk, do a search on this forum for WinPE. You will need to know which version of ATI you are using as the WinPE is different for each version.
Please let us know if this works.

another drive in my set is bootable, so then i suppose i will need to install acronis on that one as well? that one is a dedicated game drive, so i dont mind making and using a WinPE recovery media disk, so, if i understand correctly, then the acronis software will make the original backup, then WinPE (when i boot to it) will restore the backup onto the new Drive when its fitted into its mobo slot, is all that right? thank you, peter

You are correct. The WinPE recovery media disk will include the acronis software as well as all of the drivers necessary for acronis to recognize the disks. And it will be used to restore the backup onto the new drive.

ok, so the The WinPE recovery media disk is created by Acronis after i install Acronis, is that right?

Yes, create the WinPE media disk after Acronis True Image is installed. You will also need to download some additional files such as the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) and the Akronis Media Add On (specifically for the Acronis version you have).
The Acronis True Image User Manual, which you should also download describes in detail how to build the WinPE media disk.

Drivers for your new drive may not be native to a WinPE created disk depending on which ADK you use to create a recovery disk. To be safe I would recommend not using an ADK earlier than Win 8.1. With the True Image 2016 product you can run the Media Builder Tool and select Create WinPE Recovery Media. You will be prompted to download the WinPE ADK which will result in the latest Win 10 ADK download which should work for you.
Follow the instructions in the documentation to create the WinPE. I looked at your new drives specs and they say that your device is a PCIe Gen 2.0 x 4 device. I see that you have an X16 slot on your mobo that is compliant with that spec. This is probably what holds your GPU card. It would be possible to temporarily remove the GPU, install the new drive there and use on board graphics during your procedure.
Whatever you decide I advise that you select the Shutdown Computer after Recovery option when you run the procedure. After shutdown remove the source drive if you have not done so already, replace with the new drive and then boot the machine.

well i got the job done, it was sounding a little over my head, and i didnt understand it completly, so it was on a bit of a wing and a prayer. used acronis to make a file, installed ssd, then used acronis image disk to restore file to new disk, old disk was 120G, new disk was 240G, so 120G was unallocated, so used the windows disk manager to add the unallocated to the allocated, i know it sounds ugly, but it worked. Thanks very much to everyone who gave tips, didnt do it exactly as you prescribed, but input was valuable. cheers peter.
