Using Acronis 16 to install Windows 10 over Windows 7 without losing programs?

Thread needs solution

I am thinking about migrating to Win 10 from Win 7. Is there any way to do this without losing all my installed programs?

You can go the upgrade path from Windows 7 to Windows 10 which will keep the majority if not all of your apps. Only those that are completely incompatible whould be left out from an upgrade. Those which are left out may be upgraded at a later date to be compatible with Win 10.

I have upgraded 3 systems, 2 Win8.1 and 1 win7, all 64bit to Win 10.

Everything migrated perfectly.... I was impressed....
I had one very old HP photo printing program that refused to install on win8 because the OS was not recognized....
It worked fine on our Win7 platform.
Guess what ?? It carried forward perfectly from our win7 to win10 upgrade...
That is not all...The old program loads and runs fine on the other Win10 machines.... imagine that !!

It was an old HP photo program that had special auto photo re-sizing and specialized border options that I just cannot seem to do with photoshop.
So, I am here to say, back up your OS, test the restore and then let the upgrade begin.
You may, like me, find all of your programs and data was carried forward just fine.

If it all works out.... then time to do another couple of full system backups and TEST restores..

Today I upgraded from win 7 to win 10. Now I cannot use acronis, I keep getting a windows error. What can I do?

Uninstall Acronis. reboot, and reinstall.

Thanks for your responses. Looks like I can safely upgrade to Windows 10.

I would also like to migrate from Win 7 to Win 10 on a notebook. I am not sure if I clearly understand the answers given. Are you talking about upgrading to Win 10 using the Windows process as opposed to a clean install of Win10 or using True Image 2016 or Universal Restore?

Mike,

Yes, the last several posts in this thread are talking about the Microsoft Upgrade(migrate) path.

Thank you. Do you know if a fresh install of Windows 10 followed by Acronis Universal Restore to the same notebook will work? I have always heard that a fresh install was the best way to upgrade to a new OS.

I just did a W 10 upgrade and no files or desktop icons were transferred, so I reverted back to W7 successfully.

If i try the upgrade again with same results, does restoring a full backup replace the OS or will it keep the W 10 upgrade?

Restoring a full Disk backup will replace the OS.
