acronis and freenas dont work well?

Thread needs solution

Hey, im using acronis on multiple computers and store all the backups in a FreeNas share on the network. Somehow it cant finish the backup because it cant lock the file to do the finishing up things. (i dont know what its called in english, in dutch its called: Consolideren.)

Is anyone lese having problems when writing backups to a freenas share?

I know its not a lot of information but i dont know how to specificly describe whats going wrong...

Hello Sander, Consolideren = Consolidation and looks to have been removed from Acronis True Image 2016 from what I can see - this is the process of taking your previous differential or incremental backup images and combining (consolidating) them into a new single backup image.  It sounds like one of these images is being locked on your FreeNAS server to prevent the consolidation.

With ATI 2016 you get the concept of version chains where you can configure which scheme you want to have then rather than consolidating these the scheme will create a new version chain and with automatic cleanup, you can decide how long to keep the old version chains before these are deleted (cleaned up).

that is strange then... i started clean - no backups and made a new scheme for a backup and on the first one it made, it faild with this massage... ive always configuered the schemes liike this... backup every day and clean up after 6 incrementald with one chain... so it should hold 7 days ... one full and 6 incremental... have i done something wrong then?

at first i was writing to osx shares (smb) but i had so much problems with access rights that i just was about to go nuclear... so i made a VM with freenas in it... and thus the restart in backups because its another IP now... and it would be nice to start over... then this happend...

This is probably due to share permissions in FreeNAS.  You should be seeing a credentials prompt when the consolidation begins but I have found that TI 2016 doesn't play so nice with Samba for some reason.

Did you have any issue with getting the application to recognize your FreeNAS share when you created the bakcup task?

I had to tell the app where the share was on my FreeNAS which is a dedicaed machine not a VM by the way.  Did that by entering the Host name and path in the address bar on the destination screen.  I then had to add the logon credentials for the share in Window Credentials Manager to get the app to show the logon popup box to appear so that I could log in.  Once I did those steps there has not been a problem in backup function.

What i do when adding the job is: in the storeage tab for the destination... I just type in the IP (or hostname) of the mashine and then just wait for a logon screen... Usually takes about 2 seconds... But for live cd versions when storing or picking up it can take up to a minute or so before the logon comes up... I usually always work this way because its faster to type the IP instead of brauwsing through all of the network to find a computer...

I can try but would it be more stable to use ftp? If acronis doesnt like smb much... Although i always used it... And havent had this issue (yet)...

Sander,

Using an IP address is fine, I would ask though does that address show up under Network in the destination locations directory tree?  It should.  If not then I believe that you would experience problems like you describe and possibly others.

Tell me,  I am assuming that the backup task runs fine until it becomes time to perform the cleanup and start the cycle over again, is that correct?

Well it happens after every run it does... no metter if its first or 3th... also i tryed FTP and have the same problem there... on multiple computers (vareating from windows 7 to windows 10) ... i would have hoped that the FTP one would go right because its a pain to figuar out why its not working...

I just chacked if the freenas server was showing up in the network list... and yes it showed up... but loging in is a problem so far... the usual username and password wont work... it just replyes as faild to connect... I tryed a second one and also the same replay...

possibly that couls be the problem im having? that it cant connect using the hostname? or something... ???

Go to Windows Credentials Manager and add your FreeNAS logon credetials there, for me doing that fixed the absemt logon popup box that displays when logon credentials are needed to gain access.

It was already in there... and it wont work for FTP... i made a new post for this because its not about slow network anymore... ill come back to the slow network when its working like it should with the rights...

EDIT:

i think i found what was the problem... i created a newly installed VM with windows 7 and it finished the first time without problems... so im thinking of removing acronis and reinstalling it... but most of the settings will remain... so im looking for a cleaner script for acronis... to fully remove also the settings it had.... and then it should work ok.

Use the instructions and the cleanup tool in the link below to remove the app. Should do the trick.
