FTP incremental backup fails

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I've installed Acronis Backup and recovery 10, on a Windows 2008 R2 server

I've created a first complete backup of the whole physical disk (4 partitions), getting a tib file of about 47 GB, moved it on my own server (FTP server) then tried to make an incremental backup of that...

I:

create a new backup plan, then set up the same partitions, I set the name of the backup in the archive section (FTP on my server, I've tried with filezilla and credentials are OK)

But I get this error:[transalation in brackets]

Errore

I've set up in "advanced" the correct username and password for the FTP site.

Anyone any idea?

Thank you

Hello fabio roncaglia,

Thank you for your post. I will do my best to assist you.

Due to lack of diagnostic information it is very difficult to determine the exact cause of this issue. If I understood correctly, a full backup to ftp succeeds, but an incremental backup to the backup which was transferred to the ftp server fails?

I would recommend to submit a support request with an AcronisInfo report and screenshots of your backup plan creation.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you.

Hi, Anton, thank you for answer...

No, question is: I've made a full backup on a disk, then I moved it manually onto my FTP SERVER, and after this I've tried to make a backup plan :

I create a new backup plan.
I flag advanced.
method: Backup NOW and "incremental"
backup position-->access username and pwd of my FTP SITE inserted

then I click on backup position archive-->
I type in the full path: ftp://83.103.xx.yy/ftp_nameclient
I type in the full name of the file: gemini_begin.tib
then click on the green arrow on the right...

and it asks me again and again for credentials...

Then I tried in this way:
I type in the full path: ftp://83.103.xx.yy
I type in the full name of the file: gemini_begin.tib
then click on the green arrow on the right...

and it answers that in that view "there are not elements to show"

then I tried:
I type in the full path: ftp://83.103.xx.yy
I DON'T TYPE ANYTHING for file
then click on the green arrow on the right...

and it answers that in that view "there are not elements to show"

It seems like it doesn't see the tib file...

Then I tried:
then I click on backup position archive-->
I type in the full path: ftp://83.103.xx.yy/ftp_nameclient
I type in the full name of the file: gemini_begin.tib
then click ok (not the green arrow)

It seems to work, but when I click Ok for the plan, it answers with the errors I've reported above.

the user I've inserted has the COMPLETE CONTROL on the folder, and on the files in the FTP server.

--> FTP SITE is configured in this way: there is a virtual directory, with the same name as user (=ftp_nameclient) (windows server 2008 web edition), so, when user connects (for example: with filezilla) he goes directly in the right folder (and with filezilla I've verified that user can create, delete and rename all files...)

Thank you.

Hello fabio roncaglia,

Thank you for getting back to us and I appreciate your detailed information because it appears the cause of this issue can now be understood.

When our software creates backups on an FTP server, it automatically splits them into 2GB chunks. Since you placed a 47 GB .tib file to your FTP server, our software has difficulties picking it up. I can suggest either to create a full backup to your FTP server and continue doing incremental backups to it, or, your initial full backup should be split into 2 GB parts using Backup Options within our software. I have attached 2 screenshots to my post with this option.

If none of my suggestions help, please refer to my above post to contact our technical support. I believe we will be able to resolve this for you.

Thank you.

As of now... on ftp server there are the files splitted (2GB each).

BUT the error remain the same !!

Hello Fabio,

Thank you for your response.

I am sorry for the inconvenience, but at the moment the best way to resolve this issue is to contact our support directly with the following information:

1. FTP log.

2. AcronisInfo report from the machine.

If you have problems with the case please let us know.

Thank you.

Hi,

1) FTP logs should be activated on target server (FTP server remote) OR on the server where acronis fails?

2) When I have to connect to a remote FTP server with files in it... should I choose the first of the set, or the last?

3) According the fact that I've a Windows IIS FTP Server, should I use ftp://xx.xx.xx.xx/ OR ftp://xx.xx.xx.xx/name_of_the_folder ?

please note that name of the folder is THE SAME AS THE FTP USER, because folder ia a virtual one (IIS functionality)

Thank you

EDIT/ADD ON:
I've tried to make a BRAND NEW BACKUP PLAN, disk/Volume, only one out of 5, complete, directly to FTP server, with access credentials and so on, like above... NO WAY, same error. It looks like IT CAN'T CONNECT CORRECTLY to ftp server (by the way, tried connection with filezilla, all went ok, just to check: user ok, pwd ok, user CAN create, rename, delete and so on, and the "begin folder" is correct)

I can't get a ftp.log file... would you please answer at least to question 1, so that I can send a support request in the suggested way?

Thank you

Hello fabio roncaglia,

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for the delay.

To answer your first question, the FTP logs should be collected from the machine where the Acronis Agent is installed.

Allow me to elaborate some more for the second question. I am sorry for not clarifying this in my previous posts, but in order for Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 to work correctly in creating backup tasks, you will need to use the same task that you used to create your full backup split into 2GB pieces, for continuing to save incremental backups to the FTP. In your case, that will be a new backup task with Incremental backups selected, which will create a full one the first time it is run. After that, you will need to edit the task and simply change the backup location to the FTP server. I am not sure if this is what you have done. Then, for creating the logs simply run that task and it will continue creating incremental backups which are saved to the FTP server.

The answer to your third question will depend what type of ftp credentials you use when creating the backup task in Acronis Backup and Recovery 10.

Please let me know if you have additional questions or run into any other issue.

Thank you.

NO, infact, that's NOT what I've done.

I've created a COMPLETE backup splitted the first time, and then tried to create a NEW+incremental one

So, What I'm trying to do next will be

1) create a NEW BACKUP PLAN, with INCREMENTAL flagged, and with a NEW NAME for the archive, splitted into 2GB pieces, on LOCAL HARD DRIVE

2) Move the files using external drive, from Customer's server--> to my ftp server

3) Modify ONLY destination for backup in PREVIOUS CREATED PLAN, and run it again.

I'm gonna try these now. I hope it will work.

Please note that I've tried to make a NEW BACKUP directly via FTP, and it failed... so: stay tuned... :-)

EDIT: May 28th 2010

I'VE DONE LIKE WRITTEN ABOVE.

IT DOESN'T WORK !!

The error is the same:
see attach image

any OTHER idea ? It seems like it doesn't recognize nothing by FTP. Keep in mind that trying with filezilla connects normally.

Thank you

EDIT 2:

the FTP SETTING must be ACTIVE?? should I flag that?

Hello Fabio,

I appreciate your update.

I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience, but it is not clear why this issue is occurring. I have sent you a PM with some additional information.

The FTP setting should be relative to the FTP mode that your server is running, example passive or active. You can definitely try toggling this option and see what happens.

Please check your private messages folder and let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

I've send a formal request for support, anyway I'd like to share with you a thing I've seen in wireshark log:

the first time I've tried to connect to EXISTING backup files, in my FTP server, ande I've seen in log a lot of RETR commands, trying to RETRieve all files. Ok, I think this make sense, but doesn't work.

BUT, when I've tried to make a NEW ARCHIVE, with a DIFFERENT NAME, with a NEW BACKUP PLAN, dicrectly onto FTP server... WHY THE HELL do acronis software try to RETR ALL PREVIOUS FILES??

What do them matter with NEW BACKUP?

What do you think about it?

Thank you, regards

Hello Fabio,
