"Operations in progess" shutdown... still waiting
Hi,
during my last shutdown my pc showed the "Operations in progress"...
After 3 days it is still like so: how can I access my PC without risking a data corruption?
Thanks.

I have this problem since the last update of ATI 2015 in autum last year: We have 3 PCs, 2 with Windows 7, 1 with Windows 8.1 - all have a different configuration. BUT: All are showing the same issue! It seems the issue is linked to "non-stop-backup": If non-stop-backup ist deleted from the list of backup-jobs this issue doesn't happe any longer.
As it is a long known issue I wonder why Acronis does not solve it?!

Hi,
Apparently this behaviour is intended but why it should, in effect, lock up your machine, apparently indefinitely, is unclear. I had hoped that this issue had been resolved but, assuming you guys have kept the program current, then it would be disappointing if nothing has been done to resolve this irksome matter.
I contacted the Support Team towards the end of 2014 and between us managed to fix the problem on my system. However, it does mean that I have not dared to use the scheduling option since. This isn't a problem for me as I prefer to backup manually at times of my choosing.
Here is a copied extract from my final response to Support....
"Each backup scheme was set up as follows:
(Using Acronis True Image 2015 (build 6525) ..... found under 'Account')
Disk Backup Options
Schedule: Do not schedule
Advanced - Prevent the computer from going to sleep/hibernate
Backup Method: Differential (decided this might be the better option for me)
(Create only differential versions after the initial full version)
Notifications: Notify me when free space is less than 1GB
Advanced: Validate backup when it is created
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I created 3 backup images: System (C), Archives (D) and one Folder (A Flight Simulation)
Each of the partitions were mounted and unmounted successfully.
The Flight Simulation folder backup could be browsed successfully for content.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, it appears that everything is working correctly. I have verified that the backup scheme settings have not been changed on subsequent runs of ATI 2015. (**)
I am assuming that the previous difficulty at Shutdown (Operations in progress) occurred because a backup scheme had been scheduled, despite my believing that it had not. I cannot recall whether the "Do not Schedule" option was available in the previous version of ATI 2015. Even if it was, and had not been selected, ATI 2015, quite evidently, was not killing the running processes at Shutdown OR the difficulty may have been caused by the non presence of my external USB drive. This drive is only connected and powered on when I intend to use the drive to store or access backups, in which case I would suggest that if backups are being scheduled, then ATI 2015 should display a message warning the user that the Drive is not present and/or it cannot find the previous backups.
I have not tested the Scheduling aspects of the program as I don't want a repeat of the previous problem. Hopefully this has now been corrected in the recent Update."
(**) It is important to create these backup schemes at the outset as they will be used for as long as you continue to create backups within each scheme. I don't think you can change an existing scheme once it has been created and active.
To date, the Shutdown issue with "Operations in Progress" has not reappeared. As stated, I have not tested the scheduling aspects of this program as I don't want a recurrence. In the end, it may be that in my case the problem was simply caused by the disconnection of the external HD between backups.

Hello Everyone,
In Acronis True Image 2015 we changed program design so that all Acronis tasks running at the moment when machine is restarted or shut down are aborted and have after that "cancelled by user" status.
If you use the latest build of Acronis True Image 2015 (6525) and still experience this problem ("operations are in progress" is show longer than 5-7 minutes), please send us your system report using "send feedback to Acronis development" option in Acronis True Image and send me a private message so that we can contact you after report is analyzed.
Thank you.

For once, Acronis seems to be correct. That old "hanging at shutdown" issue, which has been around for many years, finally seems to have gone away here.
Interestingly, during all the years when it was there, support seemed to take the ostrich approach, bury your head in the sand and hope that everyone goes away.
Here at least, I have not seen a hang in months. Other problems, yes, but no hangs.
The way in which this process works is less than perfect. As support says, backups show as "cancelled by the user". But you don't know this until you open the interface again. There are probably reasons for this, but I would prefer some sort of warning, either during the shutdown or at restart, that there was an unfinished or aborted operation.

Dear Anna
The issue "Operations in progress" shutdown... still waiting...is unfortunately still there in the latest build of Acronis True Image 2015 (6525).
I am running Acronis True Image 2015 (6525) on Win 8.1(64bit) and have regularly the issue - I have tried to move to manual backup with no change. Only way to stop the screen is to perform a hard reboot or to stop manually all Acronis services prior switching off
I have followed your advice and sent system report via feedback form - looking forward for some help.

Luca

As already stated, we have 3 computers (two with Windows 7, one with Windows 8.1). All showed the issue "Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete"occasionally. On one machine (Windows 7) the issue disappeared after deleting the "non-stop-backup" from the list of backup-jobs. On another machine I additionally had to uninstall ATI.
The third machine (Windows 8.1) I just got back from a repair-service: The issue occurred during a shut-down as a part of a BIOS-update. The shut-down failed and so the BIOS-update. The computer didn't work any longer. So the issue costs me 200,- Euro! It seems to be a "precious" software!!! Will Acronis accept this damage?
By the way: The repair service (Lenovo) stated that the Acronis software is the only known one which causes this issue. My case was not the first one.
I hope the issue can be solved soon! Unfortunately I can't send a system report at present as I doesn't use "non-stop-backup" or ATI at all any longer.

I have the same problem on an X1 Carbon third generation running Acronis True Image 2016 on Windows 10 64 bit. My backup devices are network storage devices. There is no reason for my backup to have not completed when my laptop is sitting in the docking station yet I will still get the message that operations are in progress and Acronis will shutdown in less than two minutes. It works as stated when in the docking station and the NAS devices are accessible. However, when the laptop is not in the docking station the Acronis shutdown locks my system up and it will not be interrupted other than by forcing a power off no matter how long I wait.
This is unacceptable for business use. I cannot take a chance on losing access to my computer as the aforementioned has. And it is my opinion that Acronis should make good on that cost for the user above. The reason I purchased Acronis software and have been doing so for years is so I do have access should my laptop fail. Not to have Acronis be the problem.
Anna, I have tried to send the system report to you as requested earlier in this string howeve when I click on your link it puts my laptop info a magnification mode and I cannot type into your form. the hang problem is very frustrating to begin with and even more so when I see that it has been an ongoing problem for years. Let's find a solution. I would not like to have to look for backup alternatives.
Thank you.

I am running into the same shutdown issue. 1 laptop that only does manual backups when I attach my external drive. The laptop will not shutdown unless I hold the power button (not the best thing to do). Desktop does the same thing but will shutdown/reboot usually in 3-4 minutes.
I tried to open a support ticket but my support ran out in Sep and I don't want to pay $20 to open a ticket for a obvious problem in the software and since there is no other support options (that is 1/3 what I paid for the software).
Will start to look at other backup software options.

I hope Anna is still around. She appears to be the one Acronis rep who is willing to help with this issue.
At this point, I'm desperate, because Acronis has bricked my laptop. I have had this shutdown problem for years. (I'm aware now that I have a better understanding of the issue that this is partially my fault because I have often not had my backup drive plugged in, just assuming that the backups would resume when I reconnected it -- I should have known better.) I got in the habit of waiting a couple of hours, then manually shutting down and restarting the computer, at which point it would start up normally. Some time ago, I installed the batch file posted here and things worked for a while. However, some time ago, the problem started again; it may have been when I upgraded to 2014, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I reverted to my old workaround and never got around to making a permanent fix (much to my regret at this point). The issue has persistent through Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10.
Yesterday I tried to reboot the computer and got the usual "Operations are in progress" message. However, when I tried my usual restart later, I got the same message again. I let it run overnight and through the day, only to come home tonight to the same message. And no matter how many times I manually shut down, I cannot get past the error message. I've spent my entire evening looking for a solution. (I've been forced to use my wife's Mac and it's driving me crazy. Any typos are most likely its fault....)
I have tried plugging in my backup drive to see if the backup would resume, but nothing is happening yet. A while ago I moved my laptop and made some changes and had difficulty getting everything connected, so at this point I'm not even sure that the drive I plugged is the right one.
In November, I bought a full-version copy of True Image 2015 from Newegg. With everything going on this time of year, I don't think I ever got it installed (but I don't have any way to check now to make sure of which version I'm running). In any case, I didn't register it, because when I log in to the Acronis site, it lists 2014 as my latest version (along with several older versions, but no 2015). So now I have the same dilemma as GaryG; when I try to get help it tells me my version is no longer supported.
Acronis's VP says customers come first. If this is true, Acronis, please tell me how to get my PC back! This is a longstanding issue with the software that has persisted through several versions. I am an owner of the 2015 version, even though 2014 is probably the installed version.
GaryG said he doesn't want to pay $20 for help because it's a third of the cost of the software. In my case, I got a good deal and bought it for $25 -- so paying $20 for support seems totally out of the question.
Someone please help!

Warren,
Acronis did send me a reference to a script to download and put in the registry as part of the shutdown process. Unfortunately, you need a login to download the script so this wansn't of much help.
I did see one reference somewhere about uninstall/re-install of Acronis. So that is what I tried. I did it on my laptop first and it seemed to work and then did it on my desktop and it stopped the shutdown waiting error. The only downside is you need to recreate your backup routines. I am not sure if there is a way to export them first so they can be re-imported after re-installation. However, eliminating the shutdown waiting issue was more important to me.
It is an obvious bug and Acronis should treat it as such and assist their users.

You don't want to hear this, but the 2016 version seems to have squished that bug. Well, I see it much less often than was the case with 2015 and older. 2014 was truly horrible on that front.
I can't swear that I have never had the hanging shutdown, but it isn't the constant companion that it once was.

Mike - The bad news is I am using the 2016 version. So it seems to be a real long time bug!!!
What brought on the shutdown issue with me was the Windows 10 upgrade to the Windows 10 1511 build.

Ouch.
I have seen many reports of the 1511 build causing chaos.
Then there was an Adobe Flash update that hit other software.

Problem is still there and it is a disaster. I develop software for a living and it is pretty obvious to me that the problem Acronis has is related to the backup device not always being present. At least that is what I believe is the issue in my case. I have a NAS device. My laptop can see the NAS device whenever attached to the local network. Sometimes this is through an ethernet connection via the docking station. Sometimes but seldom it is through a wireless connection. If the laptop is in the docking station the "waiting for operations to complete" runs and shutsdown okay. Most of the time if it is not in the docking station and the message appears on shutdown I have no alternative but to power off completely. This is NOT what I paid for and it needs to be addressed and acknowledged.
I have been using the Acronis software for several years and I won't wait too much longer to see this either repaired or a work around provided.
Where is your support!??

It is quite extraordinarily puzzling why the Acronis Development Team have been sticking to their guns over this issue. Years have passed yet their stubbornness prevails - defies understanding! Seems they are in denial and are ignoring what is, quite clearly, a significant issue for some of their hitherto loyal customers.
I completed a new build recently and did not feel the need to update from Windows7 Pro 64bit to W10. I needed a good backup solution, which for many years, has always been Acronis. However, in the end the risk of facing this issue again, potentially, proved to be too great and I have opted to use 'Macrium Reflect' instead. Not quite as user friendly as Acronis but, boy, it's fast and it works and I have not experienced any downsides.
Really it doesn't matter who is right and who is wrong about this matter. The reality is all about preserving Acronis' reputation. I can't imagine they are happy to be reading these posts just as prospective purchasers may be put off when so much negativity is being expressed. I have always been a loyal supporter of Acronis True Image from way back when and, yes, there are ways around this current issue which afflicts recent versions (already documented on these forums). However, we should not have to be acting as extended Beta testers, particularly when our reports are either being ignored or dismissed. C'mon Acronis, bite the bullet and please do the right thing! Unfortunately, there is no reliable way to establish the true numbers affected and, sadly, any claims made now by Acronis will certainly be viewed with suspicion, even more so since this all came to light.
It is proving to be very difficult to maintain respect for a company that appears happy to ignore requests for a much needed change. Constantly claiming that the software is 'working as intended' is just not good enough when, quite evidently, for some it is not. My laptop keeps telling me that an upgrade is available but, will I download it? As things stand, absolutely not - the risk of work disruption is much too great.
This is all so very disappointing.

I know in my case, one machine it is a laptop that had this issue after upgrading to W10 B1511 (was W10 prior). I do my backups to an external drive that I attach weekly. To solve it, I did the uninstall/re-install and that seemed to eliminate the shutdown error.
On my desktop, same upgrade path, same error. Backup is to an external USB drive that is always connected. Did the same procedure to eliminate the problem.
Support sent me a script to add to the shutdown registry, but I didn't want to go that route if I had to. Not an eligant solution.

I'm using ATI Trial Version just downloaded a couple of weeks ago. I just tried to shut down last night when the back up drive was not connected. I got a screen saying ATI would close in two minutes. That was 8 hours ago and it's still showing the same screen. What do I do ? If I do a hard shut down (unplug my system) will I lose data ?

Hi Bruce,
looks like process couldn't be aborted for any reason.
If the message is shown for too long I'm afraid there are no other options except for hard reboot. However, it shouldn't affect any data.
Please contact our support so that we could help you to find the cause of the problem:

OK - I did a hard reboot and everything seems to be ok.
Thanks.

Hi Bruce,
You were lucky. What Anna has said is, in the majority of cases, probably quite true. However it can be a bit of a lottery as to whether you get away with it unscathed. My understanding is that it will depend on whether there is any read/write activity going on at the moment you hit the Reset button or, indeed, Power down. I imagine your chances of success improve the longer you leave the system before rebooting in this way as read/write activity is likely to have stopped, hopefully. In any case it may be a while after the event before any data corruption reveals itself.
Anna has invited you to contact Support yet, by now, surely we all know where the problem lies and needs to be corrected?
Anna, I believe I have said many times that I have been a loyal supporter of Acronis, but this current ongoing shortsighted refusal (burying of heads in sand?) to fix this issue once and for all is driving folk like me away from the product. This should not be happening. We should not have to employ workarounds or construct specific backup profiles in order to avoid this issue. The software should be transparent in every sense of the meaning of the word. It must have the ability to trap potentially serious errors such as this one has proved to be. Quite clearly, as matters stand, it does not.

Thanks Mike:
As a trial user that is contemplating purchase of the product, this problem doesn't give me a lot of confidence in Acronis, especially for such a critical function as system backup. It would be devastating (and ironic) to lose my exisiting backup and my computer as a result of installing software that is supposed to be designed to protect me from such events. I will be watching this very carefully, and will be scanning the information from other users, like you, before fully implementing ATI.
Cheers,
Bruce

Hello,
I have Acronis True Image 2015 (build 6703) installed on a new Getac Laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro. I recently got the "Operations in Progress... " message screen during shut down and after a few hours I decided to do a hard shut down. The computer will not boot up now. Even when I can see the hard drive in the BIOS, it is not detected as a bootable drive. I tried reinstalling Windows 8.1 using the cd media, but it will not see it as a valid drive to install either. I tried pushing images using Acronis and Ghost bootable media and they also failed (Ghost failed to see the drive as valid for pushing a Ghost image, Acronis did not get that far and just crashed) . I have tried running Windows 8.1 recovery and one of the diagnostic tools - Refresh your PC - tells me that "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." while the Reset your PC tool tells me "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing.".
I am running out of ideas on how to recover the drive and what to do next. I am thinking pulling the hard drive out of the PC into a USB caddy and reformatting the drive and trying to reinstalling Windows or maybe purchasing a new hard drive.
So Acronis ( or anyone else reading this) , any suggestions on how to proceed?? Thanks in advance.

Hi Armando,
Well, I suppose sooner or later something like this would happen. I'm sorry to read about your difficulties. It must be so frustrating for you. I'm sure we are all feeling your pain.
Perhaps this thread will provide a few ideas to get you up an running again:

Michael, thanks for the information. I tried a few of the things listed in the article with no luck. I have since installed a new hard drive and reinstalled Windows 8.1. I am still attemting to recover hard drive, but I am not keeping my hopes high. This Acronis True Image seems to be a very dangerous program to have running on your PC ....

In the current versions of ATI the old "operation in progress" was replaced by a language-located Message: "Acronis True Image muss eine Aktion abbrechen. Bitte warten Sie 2 Minuten" (translated: ATI has to cancel an operation. Please wait 2 minutes). This Message appears every second time (in average) when I shut down my new Laptop. Today a Windows update was corrupted, because this message remains and the PC didn't shut down after 2 minutes. Even after 1 hour this message was still displayed. Then I swithed off the PC. However this caused a corrupted Update.
Why is Acronis not able to fix this everlasting issue???
