disk clone from other pc

Thread needs solution

Hi first post on here..here goes ..

i have an ageing pc and the hdd is getting noisy i use it simply for basic web browsing and watching net flix on our main tv in the lounge it has been upgraded to windows 10 pro recently and has 3 ms accounts 1 for me 1 my partner and one for the kids. I have another powerfull gaming pc in the loft (to amuse myself on rainy days) which i also recently upgraded and i have purchased a copy of acronis true image 2016(one pc) because the olded version was'nt compatable with windows 10,  i have used it to upgrade my ssd's to larger ones works a treat ...Can i use it to clone the os drive from another pc's hdd to a new ssd??  I have enough spare sata plugs to connect them both to my pc

My intention is to plug in the hdd from old pc with windows 10 os into my pc and use acronis to clone it to a clean/ fresh ssd, then plug the new ssd back  into the old pc then boot and use as normal

Will this work ??

will acronis damage the original hdd's os to the extent that it can't be used to boot the original pc (just in case) and will i need to change drive letters to do this as my pc uses c drive to boot and so does the otherr one will there be issues with the drive letters?

Any tips or tutorials would be a great help before i mess every thing up

Awaiting your replys...thanks

Mark,

I believe ATI 2016 will do exactly what you want to do.  You will need to connect both to your new PC, either through the sata plugs, or through a USB sled, like EZ Dock 3.

The first thing you should do, if you haven't done already, is create Rescue Media, covered in paragraph 2.2.2 of the user manual, page 16.

The next thing you should do is perform a full Partition list backup of the old PC disk (See image below). This will protect you in the event something goes wrong.

Next, you can attempt a clone operation of the old disk to the new SDD.    Clone operations is covered in paragraph 2.5 of the user manual, page 19.  Often, the clone will fail if the source HDD has bad sectors.  If the clone succeeds, then put the SSD into the old PC and it should boot.

If the clone fails, you should then perform a recovery of the full partition list backup to the SSD.  This is covered in paragraph 5.1.1.4 of the user manual, page 67.  Read the instructions all the way through before performing the recovery, including all of step 12.

Hope this helps.

Ok great ..sounds easy but, another question i have created a bootable media disk of acronis and can boot from it on both pc's can i simply use the disk clone to clone hdd to ssd on the old pc, ie just connect the new ssd and boot from disk, clone it and remove the original hdd and boot? maybe the drive letters will need changing as it will name the new drive D or something

also the boot drive or source drive is a dynamic gpt disc and i have formatted the new destination ssd to mbr will acronis sort this or will it not matter?

sorry to be a pain just trying to cover all possabilities before i start ..cheers

Mark,

It is a good thing you asked...ATI cannot clone dynamic disks.  So, you will have to do a backup and restore.  I believe that going from a GPT disk to an MBR disk, when you do the restore, you will not select MBR Track 0.

Please refer to para 10.2.2 in the user manual.

ok i have done a full 542gb pc back up using acronis , no user manual for the clone disk option...so thanks for your input...but i think i'll just do a clean insall of windows 10 save all the hassle's..plus i get a new os to play with..misses wont be happy,  but in the long run..she'll get used to it ?? lol
