I thought you were booting each OS directly. Why are you trying to boot into Windows 7 from Vista's boot menu?
Does Windows 7 boot when you select the Windows 7 OSS menu entry? Does Vista boot when you select the Vista OSS menu entry and then select to boot into Vista?
If Windows 7 doesn't boot directly from the OSS menu entry, you will probably need to copy the booting files to the Windows 7 partition and adjust the BCD settings.
Otherwise, you may just need to delete the Windows 7 entry from Vista's boot manager to allow direct booting into Vista. This can be done by editing the BCD file or by running msconfig, selecting the Boot tab, and deleting the Windows 7 boot entry.

Hi,
wonder if you would help me to correct parth? I have OSS multi boot XP Pro and Linux, i wanted copy of XP Pro as another OS which i can mess about, copied original XP Pro partition to new partition with DD, however OSS could not find new OS, tried manual addition, but when trying boot to new entry says hal.dll missing. number of partitions and sizes in bootwiz.oss is a bit confusing, would you have a look, please?
Thanks

Tim Taylor,
I think you're close. You should just need to fix a couple things.
1. boot.ini "partition(#)" Reference
This needs to be set at partition(2) for the Test partition. The changes need to be made in several places: The boot.ini file, the OSS XP Test entry in the BOOTWIZ.OSS file, and in the copy of the boot.ini file used by OSS (this can be done by right-clicking on the OSS menu entry, selecting Properties, selecting Files, selecting the boot.ini file, selecting Edit, and making the corrections). Note that there are two places to make the change in each boot.ini file.
2. Clear the MountedDevices Entries from the Registry
Boot into the original XP and load the system hive of the Test XP's registry. Browse to the MountedDevices key and delete the values. This will allow C: to be assigned as the Windows partition when booted into Test XP. An example of this procedure can be found here (Steps 3-14).

Hi,
Thanks very much, that was very helpfull, now works like a charm. I just had to add boot files in OSS properties for copied OS, because there vere none before to edit, not sure but i think that helped as well.
Thanks again.

Hi,
I'm thinking of using OSS from DD10 (build 2, 288). I have the following set-up on a single driver:
1. Dell hidden partition (FAT16) - primary - hidden
2. W7 64-BIT - primary
3. W7 32-BIT - primary
4. WinXP 32-BIT - extended/logical
5. WinXP 32-BIT - extended/logical
At the moment, I'm using W7's boot manager which is installed in partition (2). This allows a dual-boot of (2) and (3). It won't allow (4) or (5) to be booted as I presume they are logical partitions.
I have some questions:
A. Would it be possible to install OSS on (1) even though it's hidden and it's FAT16?
B. (1) is a Dell utility partition - would I still be able to boot into it?
C. How do I uninstall OSS and return it back to using the W7 boot manager in dual-boot mode?
C. People seem to have problems with OSS recognising W7 partitions - what changes do I need to do to make it recognisable?
Thanks
Mohammed

Mudcrab,
I have what seems like a typical problem, Windows 7 64x (my only operating system currently) does not show up in OS Selector - In addition, when I put an OS boot disk (WinXp) in a DVD-CD, it shows up in Disk Director 10, but not in OS Selector after OS selector is activated. The only option I have in OS Selector is Floppy Drive - I don't have one in the computer Disk Director 10 is installed on. I created a partion on my C: drive (100GB) and that worked fine, it created a partition FAT32 (going to be an XP old game drive), created a folder BootWiz, and in the folder is an .oss file (which is a default Office Search file suffix on my computer). What do I need to do to have OS Selector recognise Windows 7? I attached the bootwiz.log file because it seemed to have some usefull info in it. What do you need from me?

Michael,
I need the BOOTWIZ.OSS file (not the log) and a screenshot of what DD shows (if possible). I need to know which partition is the Windows 7 partition and if it's booting from that partition or a System Reserved partition.

Windows 7 is on Drive C: and it boots from that partition. I attached a Word document with screen shorts of each drive in DD10 and what comes up when I choose OS Selector. I also attached the BootWiz.oss. It says bootwiz.txt because the server would not let me upload a .oss file.
Tell me if you need anything else, Mike S.
Thanks in advance.

Mike,
Try the attached file and see if it works for Windows 7.
Is XP not installed yet? Nothing is showing up for it in the file.

No XP is not installed yet. When I bring up Disk Director, the XP installation CD shows in the Disk Director BUT when I "activated" OS Selector, it disappears. I will try replacing Bootwiz.oss with the file you provided and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks. Mike S.

No, XP is not installed yet. When I bring up disk director with the installation disk in the drive, it shows up as an operating system on CD. When I "activate" OS selector, it disappears. I will try the new bootwiz.oss. Thanks.

Mudcrab,
Thanx and a tip of the hat. Windows 7 is now recognised by Disk Director 10. Should I repost the second problem under a new title? I created a 100GB partition G: out of the C: disk which now shows up as a 100GB (LBA) entry in disk director. I have attached the Disk Director Screen which shows the operating system on CD screen from Disk Director. When I activate OS Selector, with the CD operating system selected, it reboots the machine and OS Director comes up with NO CD-DVD operating system. It only has Windows 7 (due to your good work) and boot from floppy. I went to the "search for OS" menu item BUT "Search for CD" is grayed out. What should I do next?

Mike,
What you will probably need to do is a manual install of XP (instead of through OSS). The CD/DVD drive is not always available to OSS. It depends on the chipset and BIOS.
Use DD from the CD to set the XP partition Active and hide the other Windows partitions. Then install XP normally from the XP CD (it's recommended to let the XP installer do a quick format the XP partition). Then reactivate OSS.

Well XP Loaded wonderfully BUT I didn't hide the other partitions. I get two selections when it starts - an Unknown operating system in drive C: and the Windows XP I just installed. The Windows XP loads fine BUT when I try to run the "Unknown Operating System in Drive C: (AKA Windows 7) it tells me "Not a System Disk - MBR Error" What should I do?
By the way, I saved an image of everything so the worst disaster is back to start.

You can probably just remove that from XP's boot.ini file so you don't get the menu. You should edit the file from OSS to avoid problems. Right-click on the XP menu entry, select Properties, select Files, select the boot.ini file, and click the Edit button.
If you haven't yet reactivated OSS, edit the boot.ini file on the XP partition. I assume you made the XP partition Active and the booting files ended up on the the XP partition.

Acronis does try to start. If I put the disk back in, I get No Hard drives found with only an OK button that restarts and comes back with No Hard Drives Found. When I pull the disk out, It boots into XP which does not give me the choice of unknown operating system C: because I deleted it from the .ini. Should I install Acronis Disk Director in XP and see if it can find the windows 7 operating System. XP does see the "C:" drive in XP but it is labeled as F: and I did make it active and the .ini was on the partition.

I also created an "Acronis Bootable Media" but not sure what I am supposed to do with that OR if they sends me back to start.

When you made the DD CD, you should have included the OSS programs (there are two of them). Normally, you would just boot the CD and select to reactivate OSS. You can try installing DD and then OSS and see if that works (it should).

Hey, it worked. Thanks for all your effort. Now I am on a hunt for XP drivers for various hardware. I have an ASUS CG5270 and Microsoft scared them out of putting the XP drivers for their own computers on their site, so its a hunt and peck for me. But at least now I have an operating system to load them into. Thanks for every thing, Mike Steinmetz

This is just for information only, I have an ASUS CG5270 which came with VISTA and was upgraded to Windows 7. There is a mouse control loss with this system with some versions of the GT220 drivers. The Acronis OS Selector mouse is very iffy always when the OS Windows selection screen comes up (like low frame rate in a game), and now when I lose the mouse, the OS Selector Screen stops coming up and it boots into whatever the active operating system was when the mouse went away. I can call up the Disk Director 10 at that point, selected the other operating system, and it tells me it will have to reboot in order to go to the other operating system. If I put the Bootable Media disk in at this point, it still doesn't give me the operating system selection screen BUT it boots into the selected operating system. If I don't put in the Bootable Media disk, it goes right back to the original operating system I was in, without going to the OS selection screen. This is for info only, because I know a lot of people with the ASUS CG5270 are trying to make dual boot systems out of Windows 7 to Windows XP and may come on the same issue (making the bootable media disk very important)

maged q,
What version and build of DD/OSS are you using?
Also, the fact that only the XP partition is Primary is going to complicate things. How did you go about installing (or placing) Windows 7 on its partition? Was it installed and took over booting of XP or did you do something else like restoring a Windows 7 partition?
Can you currently boot into XP from OSS? Does it boot into XP directly or do you get the Windows Boot Manager menu for selecting between XP and Windows 7?

Omer Demir,
Can you post a screenshot of what DD shows for the drive? I need to know which partition is the booting one and which is Windows.

Tim S,
I need to know which partition (position, size, etc.) has Windows 7 on it and if the booting files are on that partition or a different partition.
Can you post a screenshot of what DD or Disk Management shows for the partitions?
