Diffrerence between bachup and validation
I hav a scheduled task with automatic validation. The incremental backup this night runs from 5:00 to 5:05 but the validation runs from 5:05 to 7:32. What is that ?

Hello Ilya,
i understand, but look please an the both attached jpgs. The amount of Data between 27.05 and 28.05 was exact the same, no defrag or so.
Additionally, the amount of backedup data on 27-05-2010 was 0,58GB and on 28-05-2010 it was 0,43 GB

The validation process will include all files included in the backup set. So, validation will include the base full plus each incremental (1-16) included in a 17 file backups set so the elapsed time can be extensive if there are many files in the backup set .

Thanks, but i think that is not the reason for a delay of 2 and a half hour from 27 Mai to 28 Mai. Must be another reason.

If you run a manual validation of the backup, how long does it take?
Is J: an internal or external drive?
Is the computer on all the time or does it wake up to run the backup?
You might check the Windows Event Log and see if Windows was doing anything during that time.

I tried it manually today, and it is the same long time. From the initial backup til no. 16 it was always the same time, but after no 18 the time for validation grows extremly.
J: is an external drive.
The computer is allways on.
In the eventlog i see nothing of any actions during the bachup/validation task.
What i did not understand is: while did ATIH validate the old and older incremenal backups, they are all validated.
The inititial Backup i did, was validated, the following incremental backups are also validatet, why validate ATIH these old backups again and again and again .......?????

Ernst,
Keep in mind the characteristics of the incremental backup. All links in the backup chain must be good. If you have 18 different incremental backups and any of the early or beginning incremental backups become corrupt, then all the later incrementals are of no value since the chain has been broken via the corrupt file. Many of us will create a new full backup after only a few number of incrementals.
The differential backup can stand alone. All you need to restore a differential backup is the base full backup plus any single differential.

Okay, copied, but while is the time from 1 1st to the 17th in a window of about 20 minutes, but backup 18 took 2 and a half hour more ??

Just an outright guess. Try running chkdsk X: /r on the partition where the archive is stored. Replace the X with the drive letter of the partition. Theory is that it could be that the disk has some marginal sectors and a lot of re-tries are being done. Like I said, just a guess and something to try.
It also could be that the incremental got screwed up and the validation routine is "going in circles" if that is possible. What about deleting the suspect one and trying again. However, before I would create the incremental again, I'd run the chkdsk command above on the partition(s) being archived just to ensure that something strange in the file system isn't a possible issue.
Longshots, but it might eliminate some possibilities or confirm them.

Hello Seekforever,
thanks for the Post. I formated the external drive, did a chkdsk J: /f /r no problems. I think, the reason is, i turned off the "write cache". I´ll see it tomorrow.
