Virtual Machine questions

Thread needs solution

I just installed Acronis True Image 2016.  It's busy doing some initial backups right now.  I added three big disks separately, and they appear on the gui below "This Computer".

Without me doing anything, two VirtualBox VHD files has appeared on the gui below "Others".  I wonder

(1) how did they get to be there without me adding them,

(2) what does this mean to me [few words for a big question], and

(3) why did not other vm disks get listed?  Note these two VHD's are in a "Mymachine - Copy" folder.  True Image did not list the originals in "Mymachine" folder.  Note those are currently open by VirtualBox and the machine running.  Also, I don't seem to have any other VHD's than these four, but I do have many VMWare vmdk files.  Why didn't it list those?  This all seems a bit haphazard and therefore scary regarding item (2) above.

(4) Can I simply back up my original VHD's in "Mymachine" folder, using a backup task from the host computer.  This would give me full backups without individual file restore capability.  This would be easier. (((Note, I always use separate data disks.  This VM has only a boot drive and installed programs.  All the data it uses are through network drives, natively backed up by the host.  So backups for the VM really need to just be full system restore, not so much incremental file access as is more common in my case for daily work product.))) Note that one VHD file is a huge 168GB.  I sure hope the incremental backups will back up only pieces of it, or disk sectors, rather than a whole 168GB every time (daily backup, possibly hourly).  ALTERNATIVELY, can I install another copy of my 5-computer license inside the VM and it function properly from there, making backups to a folder on a network share drive (physically on the host, the same drive to which my host backs up), such that from these backups I might restore a single file if I want?

Thanks,

Helmut

Hi Helmut Forren,

VHD files used to be compatiblle with our software and you could convert these files to Acronis True Image Backups and vice versa.

They should not appear now in your console, but since this doesn't affect your backups in any way, please disregard them.

I have forwarded your feedback to our Development Team and they should resolve the issue in the upcoming updates.

Conerning your fourth point, both alternatives are possible, incremental backups only capture the changes since the last backup. You can also install Acronsi True Image inside the VM and back up certain files/folders, however this will be considered as a separate activation of the license.

Thank you and have a good day!
