Resore from Synology NAS using Acronis Bootable Recovery Media

Thread needs solution

After purchasing Acronis True Image 2016 licenses for several PCs on a new home network I configured scheduled backups to a Synology NAS (DS216play). Everything worked perfectly. I then created an Acronis Bootable Recovery Media using a USB memory stick to check recovery. The PC booted with the USB recovery media but I was unable to locate the Synology under 'NAS'. I notice this also happens when browsing in the Acronis Backup software in Windows 10.

I eventually managed to find the NAS by manually adding it under network. This let me find the backup share on the NAS and I thought I'd found the solution but when I selected the backup image file the recovery manager failed to open it.

I've read on these forums that there is some form of incompatibility between Acronis 2016 and Synology NAS. I bought the Acronis software specifically because it was listed as supported on the Synology website for the DS216play.

Can someone please confirm if this is indeed an issue and if so what the plan / timeline is to get it resolved? Given the popularity of Synology NAS devices it would seem to be very much in Acronis' interests.

Thanks for any assistance or clarification on this.

Paul,

I am currently using Synology NAS DS214.  When running ATI 2014 under Windows 7, I had no problems booting from rescue media and finding the NAS through Computers near me.  I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and ATI 2016.  I have not tested NAS recovery using ATI 2016 rescue media.  I will do that today and report my findings.

Regards

I have tested the ATI 2016 Rescue media Linux version, and it never found the NAS.  I then tried the ATI 2016 WinPe Rescue media.  It found the NAS and brought a login prompt, but it never recognized my login credentials.  I even created a NAS login with an easy name and easy password...when I tried to login with the easy credentials, same result.

It is most irritating that ATI 2014 works and ATI 2016 doesn't.

Are there any Synology NAS users that have broken the code?

I do have a SneakerNet option, but 2016 rescue media should work.

If I remember correctly I was only able to access the backup share after manually adding the NAS using it's IP address in Computers Near Me. I don't think I had a security issue but when I tried to open and test restore a file from the backup image it crashed. I know the image was sound as it opened up ok in Windows.

What is Acronis' official position on this? We at least need to know a). If restore from Synology using Acronis boot rescue media is supported or b). If it's not, who's responsibility is it to fix this?

Has anyone else tested this type of restore successfully? If not is there anyone interested in giving it a test? Don't need a full restore just see if you can pull a single file out of the image on a Synology. Any help appreciated!
