Acronis Cannot find version 79

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Acronis has failed with the error message "cannot find version 79". I can see that there are two version 79 (v1 and v2) files. No backup files are missing.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Most likely, there was a problem when version 79 was created, and the backup was split in 2 pieces.

When Acronis True Image (ATI) asks for for a file, browse to it and see if that makes it happy. A simple way to do that is to double click open each backup file, starting with file #77 in the version, and then each file afterwards. If every file opens nicely, you are good to go.

Now, seeing a #79 tells me you have a very long backup chain. In general, backup chains should be short. That way, when they go corrupt, you can fall back on the last full which is not too old. As a rule of thumb, your backup chain should not be so old, that you wouldn't go back to the last full (for example, you'd loose irreplaceable files or versions of files).

Hi Pat,

I have tried browsing to both v1 and v2 of #79 but the error still occurs so I guess I will have to start a new backup chain. Is there a way of getting out of this mess without having to create an entire new backup job?

Thanks

If you're willing to, you can delete all of the existing backups (or move them somewhere else for posterity as you can still recover from any version prior to the problem).  Once the files are gone, then attempt to "recover" from the backup.

You'll immediately be greeted with an error that the file cannot be found and it will ask if you'd like to ignore that version or navigate to the file.  You'll have to ignore each version in your old backup set, but just click away until the prompts are gone.  Then, kick off a new backup using your existing script and it will start a new full version and it will (should) chug along like normal again if there are no other ongoing issues that caused the problem in the first place.
