Need advice backing up mixed environment

Thread needs solution

A customer has 2 physical server computers. One runs Server 2012R1 and acts as a Terminal Server. The other runs Server 2012R2 and hosts 2 x Hyper-V virtual machines. Both Hyper-V virtual machines run Server 2012R2. One is a Domain Controller and the other runs Exchange Server 2016.

Corporate data is stored in a share on the Hyper-V host computer.

The Hyper-V host computer has an LTO-4 tape backup drive. They use a different tape for each day of the week and the tape is changed each morning. Backups are done overnight. All daily backups must be done to the same tape in the Hyper-V host computer.

There are 3 possible backup scenarios. What is the MINIMUM/CHEAPEST Acronis software and configuration they need to backup:

  1. Both virtual machines and the corporate data?
  2. Both virtual machines and the Terminal Server physical computer and the corporate data?
  3. Both physical computers and both virtual machines?

Hello Paul,

In order to protect both physical machines and Hyper-V virtuals machines you will need 2 licenses: Acronis Backup Advanced for Hyper-V which allows you to protect the physical host along with all VMs on this host and Acronis Backup Advanced for Windows Server for the first physical machine. I would recommend you to install the trial version first. Here you will find all related articles which will help you to set up the backup: https://kb.acronis.com/acronis-backup

Thank you,

Thanks for the info Ekaterina.

Please see below the transcript of a chat I had with Acronis support. Chandrachood said I needed  2 x Acronis Backup11.5 Advanced for Universal licenses. There is a BIG difference in price between what you recommend and what he recommended. Please confirm the products you recommended will do what I described in the 3 possible scenarios and I DO NOT need 2 x Acronis Backup11.5 Advanced for Universal licenses. Please also confirm that the products you recommended can backup to the tape drive in Host computer simultaneously, in one operation, without "Staging" data, overnight to a single tape.

Me (23/02/2016, 11:52:50): new case

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:53:23): Your case number is 02660256.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:54:26): As I understand, you are looking for a backup solution for your environment. Am I correct?

Me (23/02/2016, 11:54:35): yes

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:54:42): I understand the query and I'll provide you with all the information.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:55:51): Since you have 2 physical server with the Hyper-V installed. Which has the Exchange.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:56:32): I would suggest you to go for 2 license of Acronis Backup11.5 Advanced for Universal licenses.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:56:56): So that you can backup both the physical machine along with the Vms running on it.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:57:17): You can backup them to LTO-4 tape backup drive as well.

Me (23/02/2016, 11:58:44): Please read the information I gave initially very carefully and make sure what you are suggesting addresses the questions I asked.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 11:59:41): I have full understanding of your setup.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:00:15): You have 2 physical server, out of which 1 has 2 Vms which runs AD and Exchange respectively.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:01:13): Acronis Backup11.5 Advanced for Universal licenses is the best suitable backup solution for your setup as it would backup the physical server along with the VMs running on it.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:02:31): 1. Both virtual machines and the corporate data can be backed up.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:03:21): 2.              Both virtual machines and the Terminal Server physical computer and the corporate data.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:03:32): 3. Both physical computers and both virtual machines.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:04:07): All the above 3 scenarios can be done with the product that I suggested.

Me (23/02/2016, 12:04:43): Can all the scenarios backup to the tape in the Hyper-V host?

Me (23/02/2016, 12:05:30): Can the Terminal Server physical computer be backed up to the tape drive in the other physical computer?

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:05:33): Yes, that is possible.

Me (23/02/2016, 12:06:32): does data have to be "staged"? What temporary storage is required?

Me (23/02/2016, 12:07:51): Can both physical computers and both virtual be backed up individually to the one tape overnight?

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:09:24): The data need not be staged.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:10:05): Yes, you can backup both physical computers and virtual machines individually to one tape overnight.

Me (23/02/2016, 12:13:33): so i only need 2 x Acronis Backup11.5 Advanced for Universal licenses to cover all scenarios?

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:13:39): That is correct.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:15:01): Is there anything else I may assist you with today?

Me (23/02/2016, 12:15:20): does the Acronis Backup11.5 Advanced for Universal licenses cover exchange mailbox backups and support exchange 2016?

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:15:46): Yes, it covers AD, Exchange, SQL and SharePoint.

Me (23/02/2016, 12:16:22): and multiple Hyper-V virtual machines?

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:16:25): It Also covers all VMs running on Hyper-V.

Me (23/02/2016, 12:16:50): and is it the cheapest licensing scenario?

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:17:11): For your computer setup that is the cheapest solution.

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:17:35): Shall I consider this case as resolved?

Me (23/02/2016, 12:17:37): ok thanks. You have been helpful

Chandrachood (23/02/2016, 12:17:51): Thank you for contacting Acronis Customer Central. Have a great day ahead, take care.

Hello Paul,

If you want to backup 1 physical machine and 1 physical Hyper-V host with virtual machines, you can use 1x  Acronis Backup Advanced for Windows Server and 1x Acronis Backup Advanced for Hyper-V. Both editions support backup to tapes. Here you will find the Comparison table.

Thank you,
