chkdsk make problem

Thread needs solution

i have wd 320 G , i split 20,70,70,70,70.
now i got bad sectors. the problem is after autochk chkdsk from winxp run, the 3rd partition can not read. ( xp says it is no formatted and so linux ) DD says when first run that it got problem "failed to read from the sector 188747780 of the hard disk2" it is the sector of 3rd partition start. and now it run slow, i believe it is because bad sectors and the problem off explorer recognize 3rd so it is really slow everytime acces "my computer" or whenever it refresh and show the 3rd at left part explorer bar. i did not use this storage anymore for 5 months. all partition is 99 % full capacity. off course i can copy the datas at 3rd using pci fr,testdisk or other recovery program ( which i did,but some broken). i was thinking to merge the 3rd with 2nd, because it says "Merge two partitions into one and leave your data untouched, even if file systems on the partitions are different." But when tried,DD asked directory name which made me think it will copy datas to 2nd partition, and i cancelled it.
So, can i merge 3rd to 2nd which both is 99% full, or any suggestion ( and the data is safe )???
please anyone ( sorry for bad english )

I would strongly recommend that you do not Merge the partitions. If you haven't made an Entire Disk Image backup (or at least backups of your partitions), you should before trying anything. For Merge to work, the file system and the drive both need to be intact. Even then, merging and splitting can cause data loss.

If the file system has become too corrupted, chkdsk may not be able to repair it. chkdsk may even make it worse.

It's possible you may be able to remove that partition and recreate a new partition that starts further in, skipping the bad area. However, it may be best to just replace the drive.

thanks, i never made disk image or partition backup.
since you said "recreate a new partition that starts further in" i am thinking about resizing 2nd partition and distribute it to 3rd. will it work ? ( since DD say problem on first run as i mentioned )

Hello all,

MudCrab,

Thank you very much for your assistance.

cacing kremi,

Thank you for replying.

Unfortunately it is hard to say if it will work or not because there are bad sectors on the hard drive. As MudCrab mentioned, it will best to create an image first and then try any operations with merging.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
